I know the city's rape stats are pretty atrocious, but in regards to overall crime the city doesn't quite qualify as 'the worst' when compared to the likes of Detroit, Baltimore, Memphis, etc.. However, it is worse than the majority of U.S. cities including the majority (if not all) of New England cities.

I'm not exactly sure if it is really true but I've heard Alaska doesn't really do much in the way of background checks. Sometimes areas might have another part that it sectioned off. The worst I ever heard in the country is East St Louis. I've met people from St. Louis that act like it's checkpoint Charlie. One even said he wouldn't cross the bridge unless he was in a tank. We're talking bad. They filmed Escape from NY there, the fire dept went on strike, I've heard there often isn't trash service and mayors have been killed. I have faith in small and mid size urban areas..but not this.

Really? because I work with someone from Anchorage and she only glows about it.

With 36% college graduates, median household income of$ 85,000 and 9% poverty, it cant be that 'hood' lol...

But there are certain areas...think skid row in Boston except it far more substantial in proportion to the city size. I know somebody who lived there as well, and was pretty blown away by some of the stuff he said.

ESL population was 82,366 in 1950

2019 Estimate is 26,047

That's intense.. Population loss of nearly 70% .. though frankly not much better than St Louis which still lost 65% in a much bigger city

Just as no reasonable person believes Worcester is dangerous outside of pockets like Main South and Vernon Hill, Anchorage is largely safe and suburban. Being a largely suburban city it doesn't really feel 'hood', but certain low income neighborhoods/complexes/trailer parks are very bad within the national context in regards to substance abuse and the resulting violence, rape, etc.

But yeah, no one would confuse it for Baltimore, St. Louis, etc.

Honestly much of it doesn't look as bad as I would expect, just a little "empty". Nowhere near as blighted as Detroit, for instance.

I think is quite a lot empty. Detroit doesn't have abandoned lots everywhere this city seem to have abandoned lots everywhere (satellite view).
