Hello! There is a possibility that we may be moving to Cape Cod with my husband moving yearly next yer and the kids and I would follow after the school year. I have been reading some of the forums, but the are a bit dated. I was hoping to rent a house before we bought in order to learn the area ahead of time, but the rental market looks a bit slim, especially since we have pets.
I am trying to minimize some of possible stress on the kids as much as possible by keeping some of the same activities. Right now I have 2 teenage girls that participate in music, one plays violin the other percussion. My son is in cub scouts... which I am a den leader. And all 3 kids are in year round swimming.
If this was not such a fantastic opportunity for my husband, we would be happy staying in our current location.
I am also a RN who works in IT, so employment for me is a concern.
If anyone has some words of advice or useful knowledge that they could pass on, I would appreciate it.
Cheers,
Marion

Where, exactly, would your husband's new job be located?

There are several different locations on Cape Cod that could work for you, depending on job location.

In Pocasset. Not sure where I would be able to find a job.
Cheers,

Pocasset is a village in Bourne. I'd probably look in Sandwich.

With a job in Pocasset, you could easily live off of Cape Cod and it would be a straightforward reverse commute for your husband over the Bourne Bridge. Living in a community off of Route 3, south of Boston, would give you better access to jobs in the Greater Boston area.

The Silver Lake Regional School District covers Kingston, Plympton and Halifax. Kingston is the largest of the 3 communities and offers pretty much all of the services you would require, or they are found in neighboring Plymouth. The Scouting program is strong. The regional high school has a swim team and there are private swim clubs as well.

I don’t live on the south shore, but I’ll comment you your employment. Healthcare and technology. 2 of the leading industries in MA, or pretty much everywhere from my perspective. You shouldn’t have to much trouble getting a job. Only a matter of how far to you want to travel for how much money.

.
There is nothing straightforward about that commute, especially during the summer. Route 3 into Boston is no picnic either. Trying to find a place to live with a tolerable commute for a couple who works in Cape Cod and Greater Boston is a now win for either one of them.

I would look in Sandwich. East Sandwich & the Holly Ridge neighborhoods are the nicest part but will be more $$$. Depending on your rental budget you could also look in the Lakewood Hills or Canterbury neighborhoods. The drive will not be too bad to Pocasset and Sandwich has decent schools. Lots of healthcare jobs on that part of the Cape. There is a Spaulding Rehab Hospital in Sandwich, and both Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital (in Hyannis) are relatively easy commutes from Sandwich. If you both work on the Cape, you won't have to worry too much about summer traffic over the bridges. Good luck!

The biggest medical center on the cape is really pushing for RNs to apply out there - constantly advertising on commuter rail. It's 30 miles further out on the cape from Bourne in South Dennis.

What is the name of this "medical center"? Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and Falmouth Hospital, located in the town of Falmouth are the only two hospitals and largest medical centers on Cape.
