My wife and I are moving to Boston area from rural Maryland. We currently live on a small farm and would love to live somewhere more rural; at least have a yard for our two dogs. The chickens may have to go, though.

I will be commuting to Cambridge and currently take an hour+ commuter rail into work so thought I would take the Fitchburg line from Littleton and live someplace along 495. My wife just got a job in Brookline and would like to drive to work, though.

Any advice on what the commute would be like from Berlin/Bolton/Harvard or other areas along 495 to Brookline, driving each day? Impossible? If so, any advice on areas closer in we should look at? We could afford a house up to ~330k or rent up to ~2400/month. I saw some townhomes for rent in Waltham with yards. That seems closer.

No concern with schools right now. Just yard, crime, commute.

Thanks!

I don't want to be a kill joy, but From any of those towns to Brookline, you may as well stay in Maryland and commute from there. You would want to jump off a bridge before even making it to work on the first day.

Wheelz is right. That's going to be a hike. There are lots of great towns with the rural character closer to Brookline--do you have special ties to Berlin, Bolton and Harvard?
