Acton is a relatively affluent suburb with quiet countryish corners.

Ayer is an old factory and closed military base town, with an impressively reviving center.

Both have easy access to the Commuter Rail, Fitchburg line.

As for $500 a month in Acton? I live way out in the boons in the Athol/Orange area, and it's even hard to find that price here. Watch your step!

In the Community Newspaper Group real estate ads, I've seen rather cheap studios in Ayer and one-bedroom, sometimes around $575-$675. Again, there aren't any "unsafe/bad" neighborhoods. Just working-class.
