Hello All!

My husband has an unexpected job opportunity to advance in his career working at Fort Meade. We currently live in the Cascades area of Sterling (Loudoun County) and love it here.

My question is...in the event we do relocate to Maryland, what areas would be a good commute to Fort Meade? We are looking for GREAT schools, a safe area, and a nice, family friendly atmosphere. We have a 5 year old and a 3 year old.

Thanks very much for your input!

I recommend the Pasadena, Maryland area. I owned a home there for five years, and it's an easy and short commute to Fort Meade. Very pleasant, family oriented. A friend of mine recently bought a house there and she loves it. She works at NSA which is near Fort Meade. Watch out for the area immediately surrounding Fort Meade, near Odenton. I was in that area two years ago, and that main drag there is a little "dicey".

Thanks very much! We'll look into it!

We've also heard maybe Columbia might be nice?

We are looking for a vast number of parks, natural beauty, nearby shopping, and great schools.

Columbia, parts of Laurel, Elkridge, Savage, parts of Ellicott City, Odenton, parts of Pasadena, Severna Park maybe would not be too bad of a commute for you.

I would absolutely recommend Columbia or Crofton. Much more family oriented community. i have lived on Fort Meade and commuted to Columbia. Love Columbia for families - great schools, parks and activities, and safe. Ellicott City and Crofton are some other options. Coming from Loudoun Cty, I think you will fit and like Columbia or Ellicott City the best.

Good Luck!

The Sykesville/Eldersburg area is exactly what you are looking for. A little longer commute, but it is a very popular area for Ft. Meade commuters. Excellent schools, more affordable and less congested than Howard County, and an awesome place to raise a family.

I do not suggest Pasadena in that some of the schools are not the best and definitely not GREAT. If you are looking for GREAT schools from elementary to high school Severna Park is the best bet for you. greatschools.org gives you a pretty good outlook of the schools in areas. Severna Park area code 21146, all the schools are ranked a 9 or 10. Best of luck to you.
