Last year I was on a bus tour of several western European countries. The rest stops all seemed to be theses huge clean places with large gift shop and other souvenier shopping, a large cafeteria with regional foods, and coffeeshops. But at some you had to pay a euro or 50 cents to use the bathroom. Some gave you your bathroom fee back if you purchased something.

When we first moved to Maryland in the early 1980s there was really nothing between Breezewood and Punxsutawney so, with small kids, we had to plan our trips and make sure we left here with a full tank of gas (which would get us to where we were going) because the gas stations along the way were few and far between and often closed when we would get to them. And there were no food places.

Now, except for the stretch of I70 between Hancock and Breezewood there seems to be a Sheetz every few miles.

I remember being a small kid back in the 60's and I would love to stop along the road but as you say there was very little .But I do remember "Howard Johnson's" and that wasn't even in the class as these place's now a day but it was sooooo good.

Just noticed they broke ground for the new Royal Farms near the intersection of Gas House Pike and Monocacy Blvd. Looks like they’re probably timing the opening with the reopening of the Monocacy River Bridge at the same site in 2019.

In the mean time a Nox Vidmate VLCzoning sign at Gas House Pike and Monocacy Blvd. says one is coming there. Further along on Monocacy Blvd. just down from the Sheetz and sort of behind the Fractured Prune donut shop is a commercial sign announcing another one. Anyone else seeing such activity from them in other parts of Maryland or is it just Frederick for some reason? These are ones I’ve seen just along very limited travel routes I use.

It's worth noting that when talking about Royal Farms, Sheetz, and Wawa - Royal Farms is the smallest of the three and is Maryland based in the Baltimore neighborhood of Hampden.
