Not enough voices in the impacted area to overcome the "beautiful people" desires.
Maybe, but on the gay marriage thing Northern Maine turned the vote around, by having a higher voter turnout. It's possible, not that it's not risky...

Fully half the population of Maine lives within 50 miles of Portland. The politics, demographics and economics are huge.

So you've still got the problem given State's Rights to prevent a National Park. Environmental groups buy up the land and consolidate it and do what they want with it. The group of industry/enviromental people there that are proposing the working forest - the ones Millinocket has voted against - do THEY take it over, keep it open, charge access, what? None of this sounds good at all. It isn't going to stay the same. The Companies that own it will dump it when they see fit. It's been happening a lot, since people like AHHHHH dammit! What's her name . . . Quimby! Seem willing to pay a premium price that causes the Company ownerships to run their numbers and decide whether to take the money and run or not. Everybody's got a price. This is not good.

And Conlogue and the Mill. boys obviously don't have any answers.

You know, why don't the Passamaquoddy just build the racino on their land? The state of Maine, or its inhabitants can't say no.

Regardless, the issue is deeper than that. It doesn't have much to do with keeping Washington County down. Most folks around here could care less about the place.

Volvo Line, beautiful people...

Lewiston turned out to be the deciding vote, which, if I am correct, is on the other side of The Volvo Line. Or is it? The darn line seems to change to fit the whim of whomever is speaking.

Actually, the land claims deal, from in the '70's-80's, does allow the state to say no.

I believe the opposite is true. One of the proposals that was shot down in western Maine was on Indian land.

I dunno. 'Indian Land' is the ward of the federal government, not state, and is subject to different laws. That is how states that don't allow gambling have casinos. To my knowledge, every tribe that has went to court (federal or state) over building casinos on their land have won, although the tribe and the state do come to an agreement.

It is a complex issue, like Restore, that is much deeper than us vs. them.

My prediction is that the Indian Gaming Act is going to be dismantled piecemeal in this decade. Most of the deals are as slimy and corrupt as any other gambling interests.
