Pratt&Whitney
General Dynamis
Idexx

I see these 3 companies in Maine and was wondering how well they treat their employees.

I was looking to apply for a job there was any openings.

The company I work at has great pay and benefits but aside from that....

My company? They make me work outside in the hot sun and cold rain, shoved a splinter under my fingernail, don't offer health insurance, make me work bending over half the day and carry heavy things the other half...

...being self employed is grand!

She's self employed as I am. I generally work from 5:30 AM til 10 PM. People ask me if I ever take vacations. Yes, I may go fishing on a Tuesday afternoon.

Ditto. Life is good. Retired life is even better.

One of these days, I might just be retired in Maine, and that would be a piece of heaven right here on Earth.

I'm still about 20 years till I get retirement.
I found out about 6mo ago that on top of the regular 401k I also get $81mo per year of service which is $891mo extra so far for me.

But 20years is a long ways to go in this day and age.

I had to work for months at a time inside a black steel pipe.

It traveled deep underwater, sometimes under ice shelves too. Months at a time underwater, often 7 months each year. No mail, no phone, no females, all of my medical treatment was done by a guy with OJT training [we had no access to doctors]. I had to wear black polyester coveralls. We were not allowed to wear anything that would give a clue to what nation we came from, in case we sank and our bodies were found by someone.

I was treated like government property.

They only fed us four times a day, every 6 hours.

We could only watch one movie each night.

Everytime I was underwater I could not excape from the radiation of a nuclear reactor. I was trapped not only underwater, but also within 100 yards of a live nuclear reactor.

They made me sleep between nuclear warheads.

I had to learn and practice dozens of procedures to deal with radiation leaks, and steam leaks, and high pressure hydraulic leaks, and floodings, and fires, and all sorts fo things.

I have had to combat fires and floodings.

I have known men who have died there alongside of me while serving underwater.

Submariners commonly miss the births of their chidlren, the weddings and the funerals of their relatives. We maintain control of the seas, and the majority of our nation's nuclear deterence missiles.

I only did it for 14 years though. I also did 6 years as an MP. I had to break up my sub duty. I just could not do a full 20 years on subs. Though I know some sick SOBs to have completed 20 years or more on subs.

My employer treated me like a submariner.

And now they send me a pension check every month.

(Each letter corresponds directly to a number in the alphabet. i.e A=1. )

I think it's ok, but if you really like corporate retail, then it's the place for you! It's not for everyone...
