Irfox, excellent post.

There is good and bad thoughout the US. Maine is not completely devoid of dysfunction - it's true, but no more than anywhere else in this depressed economy. Many people walk on eggshells to survive, and they are doing so as best they can; however, when the "good, the bad, and the ugly" are reported on, it's the "ugly" that gets the most press - that's a simple fact of life. "Sensationalism" may pay the bills, but an unfortunate side effect of that is the perpetuation of "chicken little" mentality. IMHO, people really need to slow down and pay attention to the "details" before they form an opinion about anything - this has always been true, but it seems that lately, it's bordering on lunacy.

Maine is what you make of it. If you move here with the expectation of having absolutely everything you want, the instant you want it, you can expect to be disappointed. If you are willing to keep an open mind and take what you can get until you can move to up something better, then you can succeed. It's completely up to how much effort you want to put into it. If it doesn't appear to be your "cup of tea" then move on.

Definitely come up for a vacation first to see it it appeals to you on any level - then decide for yourself. Whatever you do, please don't base a decision as fundamentally life-changing as a move on a few negative (or even positive) posts on a forum board. Find out for yourself.
