Maine shrimp are divine! ( imho not needed to be deveined either since they are so small and delicate).

Hannaford sells them in season and also sells frozen Maine shrimp out of season.

We normally just saute them in garlic and olive oil, sprinkled with fresh chopped parsley and served over brown rice or linguini. Yum!

When I was first married raw, unpeeled Maine Shrimp were 19 cents a pound and we ate them by the bucketload. If you're having a party just throw several pounds in boiling water for a few minutes, rinse in cold water put them in a bowl and pass the cocktail sauce. Peeling, talking and sipping your favorite beverage is quite pleasurable. Picking out ten pounds of cooked shrimp for a recipe, or to freeze, is another thing. Tedious, hateful chore so I buy 'em peeled. The only think worse is having someone give you a bushel of Maine crabs to pick out...AARGH!

Many moons ago, I used to spend full moons shrimping with my dad in the intracoastal down in Miami. Nothing more tedious than staying up all night luring them up to the lights, dragging them in with nets, boating back to the house, and then having to put them on enough ice to wait til morning. Only to get up and spend the day knockin' the heads off them and freezing them. I nodded to myself a few days ago when Maineah posted about how sharp the shell can be when you're peelin' the heads off the shrimp. Painful lesson!!! Not to mention the odor that eventually permeates into your being. You pretty much don't want to look at a shrimp for a very long time.

Shrimp was my favorite seafood. Until I knocked the heads off 1200 lbs. of shrimp in one week. The taste escaped me for a couple of years.

I would prolly spit ON someone if they brought me a bushel of crabs to clean!!!! NO freakin' way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KMA would be the yell, loud and clear!!

Picking out crabs - way too much work for the yield. Hard on the hands too.

What do the shrimp on the intercoastal look / taste like? Are they big? Where can I find them and how would I know if they were local and fresh? When is the season? I'm wondering if I'd actually eat something that came out of the intercoastal? Just thinking about other things that end up in there..... like dead bodies.

Mermie,

I haven't shrimped the waters down there since 1985-6. They were large shrimp, not the jumbos. The season was February-March that I'd have helped my dad.

The problem with south Florida is, they dredge the harbors and it screws up the shrimping periodically. I've no idea how it is these days.

I can tell you when the 'season' is... when I'm down there and it's the season, the guys have their trucks selling fresh shrimp on 441 by the 595 on ramp. We'll get some and toss 'em on the patio barbie! We'll toast Maineah! roflmao!

My dear departed kitty used to LOVE shrimp. It was the one time I had to beat her off the counter, when I was shucking them. Every dozen or so I'd drop a freshly peeled couple on the floor, one for her and one for the dog.
