For Bangor, the Average winter temp ended up 16.5° (Dec-Jan-Feb). 7th coldest winter on record (since 1926). But winter of 2002-03 winter it was 16.6° so that's the last time it was that cold.

HOWEVER.... If you eliminate December and use the Period of January 1 to March 22, this is the coldest start to the year on record. 13.7° average

Congrats Bangor... 13.7° average temp for period of Jan 1 to March 23 is the coldest on record.

I made this graphic showing the Coldest Start for any year on record for these locations..

So pretty much most of us have never experienced a cold beginning of year like this. .

3-4 years ago I was playing golf and it was 55-60

the upside is,,,,warmer, longer/brighter days are ahead of us,,
nothing like a ***** of a winter to appreciate a spring and summer,,

the other upside is even tho its been on the cold side the snow has been melting,, the banking are half the height as a short time ago

the rest of this week should be in the 40's and will feel like 60
I wonder if the really cold temperatures lower the concentration of ticks as well? In NH, they are reporting a dramatic decline in moose populations because one of the reasons was the increased tick population and milder winter temperatures. This one has been the opposite of that trend.

Don't disregard the "Easter Blizzard" forecast by European and some NWS models for Maine. I copied this from the CD weather thread.

"I know it is a long while off but model guidence as well as long-term outlooks suggest a cilder than normal and possibly very white April for the eastern U.S. As well as much below normal temps being continuously predicted by NOAA a stunning storm system is being shown by the GFS weather model and is now moving close enough to be considered withing the realm of possibility. Here is the GFS easter blizzard as well as NOAA's outlook for the first week of April.

yeah, and Since it is 10 days away, all we should be doing is watching to see if the models continue to show the "storm". Forget the details for now. Or at least don't put much stock into it until we're at least 5 days out.

I will be updating this thread.. https://www.city-data.com/forum/weath...eastern-u.html

Dear Lord ... I hope not.. Things are melting nicely but honestly- some projects need to be done- and it won't happen with still feet of snow on the ground.
I must say though- these few days of 40 degree weather are a welcome change

Here it is April 2 and no relief in sight. Yes, today and tomorrow it could go up into the 50s but then cool down for the weekend and wintry mix as well. Then cold weather early next week. Really!! When is winter supposed to come to an end around here? I have about a half a tank of oil left and DON'T want to purchase more this season.

Maybe not a blizzard, but 4 to 9 inches of heavy wet snow and 20 MPH winds will make for sloppy travel on Saturday. We'll see about 2 more inches Easter Sunday morning and then below zero Monday morning. The lakes are making ice in April.

4 to 9 inches on Saturday with 2 inches on Sunday. Anybody betting on a foot? It could be close.
