For our jobs that we'll be "taking with us" to Maine, we need high speed internet access. I've done some inquiries, and it seems that in certain areas (closer to towns), the download speeds seem to top out at about 3 Mbps or thereabouts.
Unfortunately, we routinely need to wrangle massive media file downloads & some uploads. (We currently have 10~12 Mbps, downstream here in SoCal, but we could potentially live with around 5 Mbps as needed when we relocate).
Can anyone offer help and insight in how to best locate service providers / solutions to our situation? Satellite seems to also top out around 3 Mbps?
We've let our realtor know that this is a prerequisite in our home search, but we want to cross-check since this service is mandatory for us.
Thanks!

Not sure about other parts of Maine, but here near Augusta we have Time Warner Cable. They can probably provide you with what you need. My husband says we get 15 Mbps.

Have fun home shopping!

ping time: 139ms, down 1.89Mbps, up 0.62Mbps
ping time: 135ms, down 1.19Mbps, up 0.63Mbps

I just ran a speed test against servers in both Bangor and Boston (a tad over 100 miles north and south of my location), and I got approximately 50 ms ping; with 10-12 Mbps download and just over 2.10 Mbps upload. Time Warner Cable, Portland area - more specifically, Yarmouth.

I'm going to reveal my complete computer ignorance here and ask how does someone find out what their download and upload speeds are? My 'puter has been running as slow as molasses running uphill in January, as my father used to say. I'm wondering if it's the machine or the connection.

To OP, in Maine you need cable service to get the bandwidth that you are talking about, at least in most of Maine. I'm not sure if southern Maine has fiber optic technology yet (e.g. Fios). If so, then that would be an option, but otherwise look for cable service.

Try something like: Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test to test your internet speed.

There are a bunch of things to use to clean-up your PC

Timewarner cable would be your best bet. From there depends where you're going. Portland area has updated cables as of a couple years ago, smaller areas were hit or miss.

Looks like your "blazing hot" internet is fizzling...

I'm glad you said that, Coaster (can't rep you anymore either!). I have TWC, and a couple of months ago I got a marketing call, that I could switch to an upgrade that was 'lightning fast on as many terminals as are open'. I was annoyed and said, I am supposed to have that ALREADY, so no thank you. Well, all of a sudden my internet slowed down and now it is super slow.

What TWC needs is real competition. Wish I had the wherewithall to start my own cable/internet company. I would blanket this state in broadband. I think that's the real answer to economic advancement in this state, not the wind turbines or oilsands from Canada or whatever.
