What does high speed internet and cable TV cost in Maine, specifically the Portland area? Are there a choice of providers or a monopoly, such as Comcast?

There are several choices in Maine. Cable is provided in most areas by TimeWarner. The telephone company...the hated Verizon...provides DSL in some areas. There are some other local providers that provide DSL also. Then there is Direcpc which is via satellite.

Little else of consequence.

In my area about 30 minutes north of Portland, SusComm sold out to Comcast. Cable TV packaged with high-speed cable internet runs about $109/month. (I can't believe I'm actually paying to watch television, but that's another subject.....)

Out here in the woods we don't have cable TV. A common question is the number of TV channels we get. I tell them we get 2.5 channels. That's 2 with picture and sound and one with sound only. The picture is too fuzzy to see an image, but you can hear the news. The person asking the question then blinks several times, speechless. You can get satellite TV, but I can't imagine paying money to watch TV. We do have high speed DSL and it rides on one of the phone lines.
