If you lived through the winters in PA during the 1976- 1980, then you can survive the current winters in Maine. In the winter of 1979 in PA, there was a stretch for almost 45 days when the temperature never got above 29 degrees and often it was as low as -10F with a wind chill factor around 25 below. The winter of '77-78 was particularly bad. In those winters, I used to have to take my car battery in at night , and use a oil dipstick heater to keep the oil warm enough and car startable enough after sitting in the driveway in -5F for 12 hours.

There is some indication from certain websites that with the PDO going cold, and the current sunspot cycle 24 looking pretty anemic, that the winters of 2011-12, 12-13, and 13-14, may repeat conditions more typical of what was called the Little Ice Age which went from 1300 - about 1500 AD. Global warming is about to be gone with a vengence. The current winter in the southern hemishpere is a nightmare.

Its getting close to winter. My post was back in September of 2010, and the Beekeeper responded 14 onths later with the latest post.

Who can fathom except that its a proverbial problem when people think of moving to Maine from the lower less happy states. "Yes, sure its the way life should be, but can you survive the winter?"

We are going to see some of that "winter" tomorrow.. Wednesday Prediction for my area is 6 - 12 of heavy wet snow. May mean an adjustment to our Thanksgiving Day plans.

They just delivered a big bunch of roofing this morning. I guess I will not be able to get it installed on our new rafters until after this fresh snow goes away.
