Hi! Im also looking into moving to Maine with my family. We are pretty much looking for the same thing syou are. I want my children to have room to run around (a large yard) but I also want to live somewhere that I wont have to be afraid to let them go out at night. Close community is impt because we will be moving from NY and we dont know anyone there at all. We have a son and plan to have more so schools are imprtant. I dont want my children going to school through metal detectors everyday, or going to a place where they have to worry about their safety. I just want them to be able to go to school without worrying and where students they will be making friends with aren't "wannabe ghetto thugs" like they are here in Albany. I picture my family in a quaint town where I can know all their friends and all their friends parents. Where kids play outside on the lawn and families can feel safe. Thanks for any help fidning this kind of town I have never been to Maine but I hear its wonderful. Thanks again

Default recommendation

Castine is more of a "town" with a Main St setting and is lovely however, it draws tourists due to the Maritime Academy which keeps it alive

Bucksport is a wonderful town with a Main St setting it's share of tourists due to Fort knox, the bridge and a nice festival, it does have the mill & train

Searsport is more spread out and does not have a "main st" but has good old houses that are well preserved

So it depends on what your preferences are, they are all good choices and not too far to drive from one to another
