I've only lived in Maine since this past July, and both agree and disagree about the "outsiders" concept.

When I called about the place where we are staying (rental), I had a pleasant conversation with the landlords, and they offered my fiance and I to stay in the place we were looking to rent, suggesting we bring sleeping bags and even our dogs. After a quick tour of the place, they left us at the house for the night. Not many places I've lived in, were people that trusting.

I do agree that locals get better treatment or attention in stores. I live in a high vacation property area, so I do expect that people that live here year round, like I will be, are more recognizable/familiar. More recognizable = no longer the outsider, even if you moved in from out of state. Every year this area has an influx of outsiders - they are on vacation... LOL

Plan #1. Just hang out in any of the hundreds of mom and pop general types stores.

Strike up a conversation (ex. Red Sox) with the locals. If that doesn't go too far...

Plan #2. Ask the locals for advice on anything. In no time, you will probably have a

dozen opinions and least a couple of new friends!

Plan #3. Start a project. Any project that involves a power tool, preferably outdoors.

In no time at all, you will have half the neighborhood, if not half the county in your

yard giving you advice on the proper way to do it.

A cooler full of refreshments on hand wouldn't hurt.

You are so right - hubby took his little chainsaw outside to trim a few low hanging branches next to the street and before he knew it, people were stopping in the middle of the street to give advice.

The other thing that helped us so much in Eastport is that hubby is a Mason and the insignia on the back of our car had people greeting him (and me) and immediately accepted us into the community. Course it helps always if you don't have an attitude, try to change things or be arrogant. Eastport has a large Masonic group.

Hmmmmmmm, power tools and a cooler...might want to have a video camera on hand too. Could have a chance to get some extra spendin' money from the fine folks at AFV

Plan #4. Go to a church, Masonic or VFW supper and ask the question...

How do you make bean hole beans?...or... How do you make bean hole beans?

I guarantee there will be an hour of lively banter with your neighbors!
