While there was technically an income tax prior to the Depression, it was only paid by the uber-wealthy. The top 1% of the nation.

Both of my grandfathers have told me about when it was first brought about that the common citizen should file Federal income taxes every year.

They both felt that it was a great privilege.

I remember reading where the phone tax was used to support one of our wars against (?). and that it was essentialy tax on the wealthy because of course back then only the wealthy had phones.

"I hear democracy thrown all over the place but I never seen it in the constitution. No where was it ever said this nation was a democracy."

Democracy = mob rule, think 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

This is actually supposed to be a republic, albeit a "democratic" republic. (Not to be confused with something like the now defunct "German Democratic Republic", which was anything but.)

The problem as some see it is that there are not enough representatives. A congress person is not supposed to have to represent a gazillion people. They are supposed to represent 30 thousand. I can't imagine having MORE representation but I'm not sure who a congressperson represents AT ALL when so few folks have or can demand access to them. I loathe the idea of another salaried person ... less govt is better. BUT, the way it is only the rich are getting access and slowly but surely the corporations are taking over America. We're run by corporations and as customer service slowly erodes you can see who is becoming the slaves. I can't even force my phone co. to pay attention to my needs and I am PAYING THEM. Who's in charge? We're sure not anymore.
It's the corporations.

And, THAT is unconstitutional, as well.

I probably wouldn't be against it but politics has become so lucrative a career. The pay, retirement, benifits ect is all way too much. I think they get a full retrement after only one term. I saw recently where there are congress people who own land and are being paid through some federal farming grant to not grow anything on it. What a scam. This country is soooo corrupt now. doesn't matter if its democrats or republican.

I agree.

Almost without exception. There are a few, very few bright lights in public service. It's one big greedy circle slurping from the trough. If you go along and get along you're okay. If you keep pointing out their dirty tricks... they get mad. LOL !! But everyone sees it. Some just don't say anything. Myself, I was raised to do the right thing and be responsible.
My mantra is just: DO YOUR JOB. If everyone really REALLY did what they were signed up to do (by their own free will) every day --- just did their job and were kind and loving --- we'd have the America we always did. We slept at the wheel and let this happen. I blame myself. I had no idea. Very naive.
You know you want to believe that those who are stepping forward do so for the right reasons. If I ever ran for public office it would be from sheer frustration. But, I think by the time you actually ACHIEVE a public office you owe so many favors or only the hooked-up make it .... that there it all is again. Then it's MY circle of "cronies" ... I happen to be ethical but it's natural I would surround myself with people I trust and can rely on.
We all have to be part of turning this mess back around. It's not over by any means, right??? always fight the good fight. If we keep our little corners clean ... the next guy is encouraged rather than upping the status quo of corruption. whew. sorry. long winded on this one. Enjoy your day.

I'm sorry to interupt in the middle of the current conversation, but I just want to express my regrets to the posters I so enjoy here. I unfortunately let my exasperation over the negativity of late on this forum get the better of me yesterday.

While I do not apologize for what I said, I do apologize for expressing frustrations in a post that had gone off-topic...and where it didn't belong.

Those of you who (cyber) "know" me, ....know that I'm not a negative person by nature, and that humor is usually my forte.
Perhaps that is why I responded to the negativity of late so strongly.

However, that does not excuse it, and I sincerely apologize to everyone.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming

Bewitched, I think you're awesome. I kinda think someone was maybe trying to get the goats of some??? I kinda skim read it. In a way it's lucky that I have limited time. Although I don't know who said it I do sometimes say 'just kidding' which someone remarked upon. Don't know if they meant me and I completely overlooked it because IF I say 'just kidding' I'm 'JUST KIDDING'. I disable smilies cause it drives me crackers when they are inserted when I"m NOT kidding. LOL !!!
At any rate, though I never intend any harm unless I am pretty frank about it which was once ... I think people unintentionally set off other people.
SO if I"ve ever upset anyone ... I know none of you 'know' me but .. my humblest apologies because .... I love yall. You are MY PEOPLE whom I want to spend the best years of my life with. Would be pretty stupid of me to offend ...

anyhooo --- I have never read anything you've said that upset me but I try not to double read and double read and take offense. When something makes me mad I figure that's sometimes MY problem. But then later I gripe about it? LOL. Which was wrong of me.
TO a person (almost) I think that most posters here are very cool people. I"ve private messaged a few of them and they have been as warm and responsive and NICE as any people you'd hope to meet.
Anyway ... take care. I have to go again today. I can't do some things on this computer and have to use my laptop and that's VERY slow can't keep up with teh forum on it. But someone else needs to use this computer so ...

hope everyone enjoys their day.

Keep the lights on for me. I can smell the snow and taste the whoopie pies.

Bewitched I think your post yesterday was well thought out....I think you expressed yourself well, better than I could have done. The negativity gets to all of us, and a troll knows that. It's not easy to "out" a troll....some are very good at what they do. If you trace back through the posts you will find that this was not the only forum he attempted this in, and he absolutely knew how to divide us all and still be in the TOS, but eventually after numerous posts a pattern emerges. There is a difference between disagreeing within the TOS, and inciting arguments. You will also notice that under his name it now says "Not A Member".
