I go to Maine every summer from NY.
I would like to go in Mid January. I never been there in the winter. Besides sking, what other activities can I see/do in January?

Im looking to stay on the coast. Kennebunk to Portland.

My wife and I visited Portland in January 2010. Portland Museum of Art. If the weather is agreeable (we had -0 windchill), a walk along the waterfront. The walk-in clinics at LL Bean in Freeport are always fun and affordable.

You could always hike, snowshoe, snowmobile, or ice fish! The ice fishing will require a permit. You could also ride one of the Casco Bay boats out to an island to get a new perspective on the Maine coast. If you want to stay indoors, check mainetoday.com to see which bands/musicians are performing in Portland bars, restaurants, and venues at night. Also, it's worth taking a few minutes to visit Kennebunk beach while it's snowing or right after it has snowed; it's beautiful.

I love walking along the beach when it is so cold. My favorite time actually. The frozen foam off the water makes the most amazing sculptures..then the sand blows across the frozen bits. It is really something to see.

Amy J-Can't wait to see it again this coming winter!!

Some of my childhood was spent in kennebunkport- I remember walking out on the breakwaters of the kennebunk river- breakwaters on both sides, but its a beautiful walk, and the scenery is gorgeous
on the kennebunk side, the beaches go on for quite a ways-great place for a walk

just watch your footing, it can get slippery

of course, one of my all time fav places is pemaquid point, you can drive right to the lighthouse and walk around on the rocks, right on the ocean!!

You can cross country ski on the beach while watching surfers ride the waves. Where else in the USA can you do that?

If you walk on the rocks in January you can take a fall and be hurt badly. Wear some traction aids on your feet if you try it.
