I'm planning on taking a road trip around the country and really want to include Maine in my travels, I'm just curious as to which parts of Maine would you guys recommend I visit? I'm more into visiting mountain area's as you can probably tell from my screen name, than the coast, but I hear the coast in Maine along with Oregon are supposed to be the most beautiful in the country, so would it be worth driving through the entire state to check it out? Also the North Maine Woods look quite intriguing and I was wondering does the Mountainous region of Maine go through the North Woods? Also would it be worth visiting Moose Head Lake? It seems like a cool spot to visit as well, any advice or recommendations as to which parts of Maine would be the coolest to visit would be appreciated.

The biggest mountain in Maine is Mount Katahdin. It is in the Big Woods, just northwest of Millinocket. It is Maine's most spectacular place, imho. There are several other great mountains in the same park (Baxter State Park) or in the area. The most mountainous areas are generally west of Millinocket. The further south and towards the coast you go, the fewer mountains or hills.
There are some nice beaches on the coast, if you like that.
The coast is pretty crowded from Acadia National Park south.

It would be worth it to drive the entire length of US1 from Brunswick to Calais to see the coast, then go to Baxter State Park to go to Mt. Katahdin. US1 from Kittery through Biddeford, Saco etc. is very touristy and traffic creeps along, so you may want to bypass it on I-295.

Im partial to a few areas, one being pemaquid point-you can drive right to pemaquid lighthouse, and you have the ocean right in front of you with rocks to walk on, have a picnic
and theirs a beach nearby-pemaquid beach
both south bristol and boothbay harbor are nearby-beautiful coastal towns

The coast is only a small part of the state so you won't need to plan to cover the entire state. Do see it, it is beautiful and worth the drive. The communities along the coast are interesting, the scenery is beautiful and the food is great!

The Moosehead Lake area is sort of the gateway to the huge uncharted (or barely charted) North area. Beautiful lakes and very quiet. Sort of like it might have been "at the beginning." Highly recommend it in addition to the coastal area. In fact, seen one coastal town, seen 'em all, although they are all delightful. I favor Reid State park, off Rt.1 near Bath. Rocky cliffs and crashing waves and a beach and dunes all within a mile.

Moosehead Lake and Greenville area have always been a favorite of mine. We tented there at Lily Bay Campground state park when our kids were growing up. A trip out on the "Katahdin" the multi decade old steamship is well worth the time. Moosehead lake is huge. Another beautiful inland area is Rangeley and Rangeley Lake and Oquosic. Gorgeous in the fall but nice anytime. I think you will enjoy Maine.

I have loved the areas of VA that we have visited ie - Harper's Ferry, Charlottesville, and the Shenandoah Parkway and also loved Luray Caverns. Hope to visit your state again soon.

Pssstt! - Harper's Ferry is in West Virginia, not Virginia.
