Bonnie did not like our current dog [Dutchess] for a long time after we adopted her.

Then one evening Bonnie and Dutchess were stepping outside together. Dutchess bounded out the door, and was her normal playful ball of energy, bouncing here and there. As Bonnie closed the door behind her, Dutchess' attitude had changed completely, she pinned Bonnie against the door, and was frantically trying to push Bonnie back through the door.

Bonnie opened the door and came back inside, and Dutchess stood in the open doorway, facing outward growling. She was looking in the dark shadows of the forest, and was very insistent that Bonnie not go outside. Dutchess did not run away, but apparently wanted to guard Bonnie.

I went out with a pistol and flashlight, and did not see anything.

After that occurrence Bonnie has decided that she likes Dutchess.

A few years ago, a local Game Warden was checking duck hunters along the edge of a potato field, next to the river, when a rabbit ran under his truck. As the Warden looked up, there was a fisher cat at the woods' edge. The warden was surprised that a bunny would use an idling pickup to escape the cat, but I guess anything was better then the alternative.

I fisher is a large member of the weasel family as is the pine martin Other members in Maine are the weasel, mink and otter. A fisher cat is actually a misnomer, but they are about the size of a cat. They have nothing to do with fish. Otters love fish and are the most playful animal in the Maine woods. They make slides that go into natural openings in the water near rapids. They climb up on a high snowbank and slide down into the water for the pure joy of it. The slide down on thier bellies, on their backs and sometimes they roll down like a corkscrew.
