Anybody own one? I am doing research before buying one and wondered if anyone has input....good OR bad. I notice that there is a WIDE price range from a few bucks to thousands! I'm probably in the under 300 range!
I have one and am a member of a website/forum for people that detect and for the most part live in Maine. You can find them HERE, a really nice group of people. Check their site out, there's lots of helpful info there.
But to answer your question, I currently own a Fisher F5 which sells for around $600, my wife has an F2 which sells for around $300 I think it was. The major difference between the machines is the type of coil used, mine has a "double D" coil and the wifes is the standard round coil. Mine will also penetrate deeper into the ground than hers will. Depending on what you're looking for will depend on what type coil and machine you need. Both the Fishers are good basic machines. The higher dollar machines are more sensitive and will penetrate the ground even further. The advantage to depth is you'll find older items, great for relic hunters. You'll also find older coins and jewelry too, but you must get through the junk that accumulated over the years around the older stuff (pulltabs, bottle caps, nails, foil and other useless things). Some of the higher priced machines are waterproof so you can detect in water with them. A couple of the members on the said forum have them since they do alot of beach detecting on the coast.
Anyway, before I ramble on I hope I somewhat answered your question. If you visit the forum and even register, tell em FNolan sent ya
I have an older Minelab. It was about $700.00 when I bought it. I have used it now and then on beaches and around our property. I found a few rings and coins nothing to get all excited over. Lots of brass from bullet cartridges, lots of old fising lures and spinners at camp sites. It's a fun thing to do though I don't really do it much now. The last time I used it was to detect a waterpipe in the back yard...worked well for that!
FNolan, I checked the site you recommended and see no pictures. Do you have to join to see the pictures?
Pictures ? Not sure what you mean, in the posts or the photo gallery ?
