Being essentially in the same boat in looking for a decent job the past few months and having been to the state's CareerCenters...here is what they have given me for advice for applying for a job.

Do not submit your resume to the HR director if possible. Contact the company in anyway possible and find out who is actually hiring for this position and send them the resume. They would see it first and then give it to their HR director.

Make the first upper half of your resume compelling...it takes them approximately 17 seconds to read the upper half of your resume. If you catch their eye then they will read further.

Develop a 30 second 'Elevator' speech about yourself. When you contact the employer a week after submitting your resume if you get their voicemail you can leave your speech there.

Just a few tips from an excellent speaker I saw there this past week.

My husband and I want to move there for the same quality of life reasoning. Scaling things back to enjoy a more simple lifestyle is an easy choice for us. You may not be able to choose how you die, but you can choose how you live! I'll be giving up a pretty good adm job in healthcare to enjoy some down time. I've burned out, and hope to find a rewarding fun job (would love to work for some bio research institute, park, sanctuary, organic farm). Will even volunteer for the right "work". My husband (who would move to ME tomorrow if I said go), has a small plumbing company down here. He used to work as a computer consultant but got more satisfaction from hands on work. He's really good at it too (learned the trade in Germany where he is from). I don't know about Maine, but there aren't enough quality trades people down here. Someone told me the county/city/town plumbing inspector jobs can be kind hard to get unless you know someone. Is that really true? We are hoping Maine will have room for us.

I somewhat agree with what you are saying but the cold hard truth is you won't have a lifestyle if you don't find work you enjoy and or can tolerate. Not to mention sucking up work that you just get by on frequently means working two jobs to make ends meet. Which in the long run leave very little time for that 'lifestyle'.

Having come from a job that I was tiring from but getting excellent wages and benefits, the concept of taking something less than that is a hard pill to swallow. When I started that job I would work anywhere up to 70 hours some weeks and sometimes beyond. That was about 10 years ago...the idea of having to do that these days just to make the rent makes me ill. But given the less than stellar job market here, that may be the direction Im forced into.

Default job search

I got a chance to meet with Joe Kumiscza, ED of MESDA about their plans, programs and networking last week. They are extremely progressive and sounds like they have a lot of resources for job placements.

you can check them out a mesda.com

good luck!

Yeah, I have to agree, every HR person I've ever met was a little clueless what it took to pick a good employee.

Once we had someone who was well qualified, plenty of experience, and a great person for the job. He sent the application to HR and faxed it attn: my boss. My boss hired him. He was a perfect fit.

The woman in HR later told us, He didnt send in a cover letter so she tossed his resume in the trash. She stated on the job ad that she required a cover letter and he didnt provide one.

DOH!

Could be a opening in the Caribou Police Department if they don't cover up for him again. You might try there.
