Tourist-haven.

Not that I have a problem with that, but the OP seems to not wish to have that.

Belfast is next to Camden which is the heart of mid-coast tourism.

But I've also been reading that even though the cost of living is lower the higher north you go, the job market is down. I had thought about Bangor even though its not right on the coast, but a few things keep me weary about settling there... firstly I'm afraid I'll slip an pronounce it wrong (being from the south I have a lazy mouth and Bang-OR could very easily turn into Bang-ER) second, the weather doesn't seem as nice (I've been watching the weather for Portland and Bangor on my weather channel app on my phone) and last but not least, the job market. My husband and I have discussed renting before we get ourselves into a jam buying a house somewhere we're not sure of... I just wish this whole process were easier.
Woahmellie....wait a minute. You are moving to Maine without jobs? I can't tell you how strongly I suggest against that.

I don't know what you mean by the weather in southern Maine seeming "most mild". We get crazy ice storms and a lot of the ocean weather, hurricanes, etc. So it is ocean weather + winter cold.

Maine is wonderful and beautiful, but don't move up here on a whim. House-hunt in March, for example. See if you still like it.
