A business colleague of mine and I had to drive thru Monroe, LA recently. Our gag reflexes were fully engaged the entire time. Aftewards, both of us noticed we had mild headaches and soar throats. That was the most godawful smell I've ever experienced!!! Was it a fluke or do the citizens of Monroe live with that every day?!? I cannot imagine living with that.

PJ

Omg, I totally forgot about the smell, lol. It's the papermill and luckily if you live there long enough you'll lose your sense of smell.

Most cities and towns in the south have some kind of stink. Texarkana has two nearby and that city constantly stinks. Shreveport has a dogfood plant that stinks up the downtown area... makes you want to gag.

I know exactly what you're talking about! We have one large refinery, and it smells as well. I can only imagine that multiplied many times!

Foretunately, it's not that noticeable most of the time unless you're in that part of town.

This coming from someone who works with chemicals daily (fiberglass, paint, etc etc etc)... and has developed a very high tolerance to chemical smells and can tolerate most industrial areas just fine.... monroe is by far the most intolerable stench I've smelled. If I had to define "gag" on a scratch and sniff, it would smell exactly like monroe at night!

Default Shreveport is the stankiest

Ok I live in Texarkana and recently got a job right across the street from the dog food plant in Shreveport. Yeah paper mills do smell bad but you are able to get past it and its not all the time. This smell though is the absolute worst I have ever encountered. They are cooking dead animals! All fine and dandy except this is the main street entering into Shreveport just before the downtown area. I have seriously gagged and come close to throwing up! All of you people defending this place, including senators, have to encounter it to believe how horrible it really is. I read a post on the Shreveport Times that actually has someone saying just stay out of that part of the city. Sure everyone should stay away from downtown Shreveport and the casinos and all the tourism that this city brings in. Thats the answer right I think they should bottle the smell and release it in a senate hearing just to see how fast the room clears.

I know it exists but I've only smelled it once. In Texarkana it doesn't matter where in the town you are, the smell will hit you. In Shreveport it's centered in the area between downtown and North Hearne along North Market. Anywhere else in the city and it's a non-issue. I do feel bad for you having to work near that plant, though.
