They were respected in the neighborhoods they supposedly represented. Ice Cube was a good example of this. Scarface (out of Houston) is another example.

Many rappers who talk all that 'hood talk only talk it because many have never seen anything else. Rapping becomes a last resort in an attempt to avoid death or prison and for a select few they make it big. Then they are exposed to places, people, and a lifestyle they never knew existed. It is easy to claim X hood for life when all you have ever seen is that hood. Then the money comes and empowers you to move. The kicker is the money only comes because of your "affiliation" with the hood. So how does one keep the funds coming in that allows him to stay in Calabasas and avoid going back to Compton? Keep repping the hood, on records that is.

The hood is a little over rated. Granted those two guys are in the late 30's,early forties so that may have something to do with it.

Does anyone remember when Ice-T emphasized being born in New Jersey to give himself credibility as a rapper even though he moved to L.A. at age 12 just because rappers from outside the Northeast were seen as lacking in credibility?

When I actually did listen to rap (many, many moons ago) Ice Cube was one of my favorites. I am very familiar with his earlier work. He has never claimed to be a gang member. In fact, he has said as much in interviews.

The problem with this kind of thing is everyone in the neighborhood thinks they are an authority. I am not saying this defend Ice Cube. I could care less. Dude is living the good life in the Valley now. I just laugh at all these people who brand themselves as gatekeepers for the "hood". If you are not familiar with these neighborhoods take a lot of this kind of comentary with a grain of salt.

I wonder if the guy in this clip calling out Ice Cube would trade his present circumstances for Cube's?
