Even though it may technically end at Normandie, the problems do not end there as you head east. With Compton, Carson and Wilmington to the east you have a whole host of new crime, gang, etc... related issues that are not small by any means. You have to be very careful which streets you drive down let alone try to live on. And colors of skin and clothing become a serious issue.
I have an aunt who lives in Carson ca and it is much much safer than Compton, Wilmington, and harbor gateway. Carson has the university with beautiful homes all around the school. North Carson is primarily African American, but they are middle class blacks with incomes in the range of 65,000 to 150,000 a year. Also there isn't much to rent in north Carson. South Carson has certain spots that need improvement, but is not as bad as the surrounding area mentioned. Carson is very diverse with Filipinos, whites, Asians, black, and Hispanics. Most of the Asian, whites, and Hispanics live in south Carson, but some live in north Carson. Carson is nearly finished with the renaissance apartments that will rent for 1300-2500 a month.

If I'm not mistaken, these are the apartments that burned to the ground yesterday.

the wood framed portion of the apartments(incomplete portion) got damaged and a few mobile home behind it. From my understanding the rest of the apartments are okay.

"City officials said today on Carson's website that residents of the adjacent City Center senior housing apartment complex that opened in May were allowed to return to their homes last night. Just four homes of the 85-unit building were damaged. "

I like Gardena and I’ll say that’s not a great neighborhood. Pretty close to Rowley Park which used to be the hangout for the Shotgun Crips.

What exactly are you looking for? Surely you took a look around before deciding to move there...

I lived in Gardena years ago - Normandie/Redondo Beach Blvd-Back then it was safe. Night time never went out walking even though we were walking distance from a small park. Driving by recently, the streets are filled with lot of vehicles. Back then there were spread out and lots of empty parking spaces and the little park is filled with a lot of questionable people now. I wouldn’t live out there now even if there was opportunity to purchase a home. Shopping, restaurants - especially all the food choices are probably the only good reasons to come out here (Hustler Casino went little downhill too) use to be nice to grab a drink at the lounge.

Will be moving far far away soon, but....
If I was to stay renting, we would definitely do Redondo Beach or Torrance

I would pick another area for school aged children, seriously. Take a look at Torrance which is much nicer and right next door. Its very much worth whatever difference in price or size you have to adjust for. Saving a little money by living in Gardena isn't worth it. I'd get a smaller place and even have a kid sleep in the living room on a pullout couch over living there for greater peace of mind, safety and overall quality of life. It's always better to look for bargains/deals and tighter living quarters with children in the nicer location. Even without kids I would go for the safer areas even if tiny.

I would also recommend not living on the main streets which have more noise, traffic, crime, etc... Those aren't good for kids or even adults to be walking around, riding a bike, etc... Do yourself and your daughter a favor and look around a little more. Also be aware of the drug, gang, crime scene in the schools there especially and she gets a little older. There is a bad element that she'll be faced with pretty early on.

Take a look at this school performance map to get a better idea of the lay of the land. Zoom into Gardena and Torrance:
California School Performance Maps

Notice how the middle and high schools are terrible on one side vs. the other. Even if the elementary school itself is ok, keep in mind that the neighborhood really isn't. Expect sirens, gunshots, accidents, shady characters, etc... on the main streets.

Derek
