That Canyon Country area seems to be affordable

CA is a huge place and many places offer what you are seeking, but home cost will be your biggest obstacle. With your degree/job in mind, I'd say look around the refineries in El Segundo and Carson. Then look eastward from there to find housing.

I'll offer this. If the only way you can afford to move to CA is to move to Lancaster/Palmdale or the Inland Empire, then find another state. Those areas are so far from the "CA dream" that it hardly resembles it. My opinion.
Without going into politics, the southeast is really in your face about it (both left and right). Trust me. To the point where a random stranger in a store will bring it up in the checkout line. It gets old really quickly.

Based on your wants/needs, you are NOT going to be able to purchase anything anywhere near Los Angeles with your purchase budget. But you should be able to obtain a rental with your listed rental budget of $2k-$3k per month.

From what you are looking for, I'd say the SF Valley is where you want. Maybe Burbank, NoHo, Sherman Oaks or even as far west as Woodland Hills. These areas have all that you want and more.
Because I am open to other areas. I just wanted to hear about areas around LA first. I wanted to keep it broad since I never lived in CA.

I think you should come out and visit your friend in Temecula, then spend some time with your friend in Compton. You'll be interested in how different these two areas are, and it would give you a better idea of what you're looking for.

I’m taking a graduate school class in computer science and they stopped the entire class to rant and protest about Israel’s “oppression” of Gaza. We have critical race theory lectures in computer science classes advocating for minorities to be elevated over whites due to “systemic racism” it’s beyond absurd.

Buildings here have political slogans all over them.

Not only that there’s harsh political blowback from the extreme right in CA too.

Most modern white supremacy groups started in CA prisons. I even saw people aggressively promoting Donald Trump in the middle of Los Angeles. These aren’t KKK bafoons either more typically biker gangs and other members affiliated with the Aryan brotherhood etc. They’re often armed and dangerous.

Don’t forget the Charlottesville counter protestors that killed the person were all linked back to right wing paramilitary groups from Southern CA.

Ya, you ain't gonna escape politics out here. Be careful what stickers you put on your car, what signs you have in your yard, etc. It's not "in your face" it's more cowards that will key your car or steal your stuff after dark if you don't seem to be on their "team".

But ya, the public education system out here is a petri dish of radicalism.

I mean, it doesn't have to be a mansion or anything. I am good with smaller spaces (born and raised in the city).
Also, I don't mind some fixing up and improvements. I find it to be a bit fun.

Ok, noted. Politics are everywhere unfortunately. I get it. What I am saying is I don't engage, and from what you both are saying, it seems like you would have to engage for those results. Where I live now, someone will just blurt out *insert politicians name here* unsolicited.

You serious?

That's somewhere you escape from; not run towards.

One of the things you gotta remember about politics is that you may not care about it, but it cares about you.

For instance, you say you're a car guy, but you gotta understand that as far as the 'powers that be' in CA state politics are concerned that makes you one of the baddies. The political imperative is to remove ICE vehicles from the equation entirely, but even if you're an EV guy, the politics aren't in your favor because quite frankly all individual motorized transportation stands in the way of the climate goals in the new green deal. The political focus is density and transit. As a 'car guy' you will feel that.

Also worth noting that basically anything in your buying budget, even small places, will be in a dump of a neighborhood. My budget is much much bigger than yours, and I consider buying in SoCal essentially out of question just on that count.

No, I didn't realize that about that one. I did try to screen for that, but I missed this one. Sorry. Well, it's a good indication that what the OP wants within his budget doesn't exist. Another poster said, he should be able to find something to rent, within his rental budget, so hopefully that will work out for him.
