The OP would run from Santa Clarita screaming. Bucolic suburb, far from everything, terrible summer heat reminiscent of Arizona. Last time I was there, I was attending a church service during Covid. We had to sit outside in the sun and heat. It was 112 degrees (August). No thanks!

Why don't you just move to Nevada or Phoenix

Sure it's hot, but not humid

This thread is a perfect example of the dichotomy of CA real estate.

The "CA dream" (SFH, palm trees, close to the coast, good schools/neighborhoods) is not attainable any longer, except for the wealthy and/or people who got in a decade or two ago or earlier.

My kids won't be able to stay/live in CA.

You’re right about that, mine didn’t & neither did I, & none of us planned to leave San Diego but oh, well. I can hardly believe the prices in my old north SD county neighborhoods now.

Was it ever, though? "SFH, palm trees, close to the coast, good schools/neighborhoods"....was always expensive (maybe if you removed "close to the coast," it was a little more affordable).

The difference is that then, young people buying their first home--usually a condo/townhouse, fixer, or in a so-so public school district-- WAS affordable.

Remember that Neil Diamond song "L.A.'s fine... rents are low..." He spoke the truth - back then. Difficult to believe now that it was ever a reality.

I Am I Said lyrics (1971) Neil Diamond

L.A.'s fine, the sun shines most the time
And the feeling is "lay back"
Palm trees grow and rents are low
But you know I keep thinkin' about
Making my way back

(He's from NY)

Huh, I never heard it called that until this thread. Good to know.

This is becoming more and more likable. Seems like either of those two states roughly have the basics of what I am looking for, while still being affordable. People always seem to forget that there are a lot of really nice cities that started not so good. Buying/moving to a not highly sought after location doesn't mean it will stay that way forever. I've seen it happen over 10 years in the city that I am currently in. There were neighborhoods that you couldn't pay suburbans to live in. Now, you can't even afford a house in those same neighborhoods. Same thing in many areas of NYC.

I can definitely afford SoCal if I rent, but I would like to buy my second property. It just doesn't seem obtainable in CA. Maybe it's for the best. Going by some of the poster's comments/attitudes, I may not like it there anyway LOL.

This one is a little bigger, and almost a third of an acre for $250k:

No Palm Springs!? I was thinking of this town but I knew I wouldn't get a .5 acre for the price I was looking for. Mrs. QL wants space between neighbors so Cali may not be an option. Looking south. Appreciate the feedback.
