I will be attending FIDM in Fall 2008, and would like to meet alumni, current students, and anyone who knows about the atmosphere there. Also if anyone has tips on where to live other than the school's apartments that has a reasonable price, please share. I read some of the replies from other people and they were very helpful. I believe finding someplace else to live besides on campus would help cut the costs down.
Thanks!

Are you sure you were accepted? Dont you know that FIDM does NOT have on campus housing? They offer "Housing assistance" which basically means they will help you find a place to live based on your budget.

Default Fidm La

If it's the downtown LA FIDM campus, for the love of God DON'T LIVE NEAR CAMPUS! Downtown L.A. is horrible! I've lived in L.A. over 30 years and they couldn't give me an apartment down there. The closest area that is nice is Glendale or maybe Koreatown (eeh). Los Feliz would be another good choice but I have to warn you, traffic is not going to be your friend. From Koreatown, you can take the train or one of the three buslines that actually run well. But I wouldn't depend on the bus to get around unless I was flat broke.

Please don't go to FIDM. It is a horrible school, and will not help you get a job in the industry. If you are serious about working the fashion industry, New York is the place to be. I would recommend LIM in New York City (limcollege.edu).

Hi Rece,

I am a FIDM student at the San Francisco campus who is planning on transferring to the LA campus in about a year after I finish my program. FIDM is not a horrible school. Like any college, you can't just expect the degree to get a job for you as well as the staff or teachers. I know several people who have graduated both from the FIDM in LA and SF campus who are working in the industry and love it! FIDM is a very well known school. My good friend went to FIT in New York after attending FIDM and graduated. She did a couple of internships and said that many of the companies whom she interned for in New York had a lot of great things to say about her attendance to FIDM. Then again, certain schools may not fit everyone. I attended the Academy of Art University out here in San Francisco and hated it as well so it just depends. I will say if you are tech savvy and love fashion then the LA campus is where you want to be for sure! I've heard numerous great stories about that campus and their career center is awesome, they have so many internships for good students.

Anywho, any FIDM students who are currently staying in one of the housing down there? I see its pretty clear that I should not stay in downtown. What about Mid-City? Or Toulca Lake in Hollywood? I was thinking about Park La Brea? Is that an ok area? I know NOTHING about LA. I have been a bay area girl my whole life! Don't have time to get around much. Only come down there random weekends to shop lol.

Park La Brea is pretty and expensive. 1 bedroom runs about $1500. The surrounding Wilshire Corridor is a little less but not much. Continuing towards FIDM, Koreatown is probably your safest, less expensive option. (1 bed $1,000 2bed $1,500) Maybe the two of you can roomie.

That Lauren girl from The Hills and Laguna Beach goes to FIDM. The girl I know will be graduating this spring. She got offered an internship with the company that she's always wanted to work for. So it obviously worked for her.

Huh? Rent a loft and walk to school, or better yet move near a train station so that you can take the subway (7th Street station entrance at Hopel. It is about 3 blocks away.

And what exactly is so horrible about downtown? The easy access to transit, Staples Center, the Pantry, Pete's Cafe, the new Ralphs supermarket (and lofts), I could go on and on. It may not as scintillating as downtown Glendale (yawn). And what is wrong with Koreatown?
