The title says it all.

I used to actually work down near LAX in the 80s and knew all the little hole in the wall super-cheap car rental places as I passed them every day. A lot of big corporations wiped out many small companies since, but there must be some competition left?

Just looking for something to get around in with unlimited miles and Automatic/Air on a weekly basis.
It needs to have an airport shuttle - or be next door to a hotel that has a shuttle to hop on.

Recommendations?

I've heard too many horror stories about no-name car rental places. I'd never risk it to save a few bucks.

Advantage is not a bad bet from what I have heard, compared to the larger companies at LAX. Fox is among the lowest price, as well, but I have heard mixed reviews, and I seem to recall that Fox buys used rental cars from other agencies, so the vehicle may not be new and may have damages on it.

It's all about the deals for that week. Generally, Alamo has been pretty good to me. Also depends on the size vehicle you want.

Thanks all - I checked these for 10 days straight in August - (lowest priced sh*t car- lol)

Advantage came up at $50/day - REALLY EXPENSIVE
Enterprise - $52/day WORSE!
Fox was 1/2 the price - $25/day - but still nowhere near the $12.95 teaser rates.
Hotwire was $29/day.
Platinum? lol

I haven't done Priceline yet - but still have plenty of time left to shop -

Have had horrendous service with FOX, at several airports (not tried at LAX, though). Long waits (waited over 90 minutes in 2 lines at Phoenix Airport to get my rental car) and poorly coordinated staff were some of the issues I found. Cheap price, but really poor service.

I would try Hotwire, too, as I have gotten some very good deals at LAX with some of their special rates. I never do well with Priceline, nothing that I could not negotiate myself with the agency directly.
