I'm interested in knowing your opinion of South Huntington, south of Jericho Tpk and east of 110 (I don't know if that neighborhood has a name). I've read the forums here and there is some concern over the school system. I won't have kids in the school system, so for me do you think this area is OK? It's certainly more affordable than some other areas, but I'd like to know if there are any red flags that I should know about. I'm just starting to explore that particular area. Thanks.

One of my daughters has lived in South Huntington for several years and she and her family are very happy there - there is nothing wrong with the area. (There are a few streets that are mostly rentals which has an impact, but we're not talking specifics, here - we're talking in generalities!)
In fact, there are many expensive homes around.
That area is fine. As Elke said, parts of HS are bad - whether or not you are talking about schools - but that area ("behind the mall" we always called it) is a nice little area. Safe and borders on a really nice area off Wolf Hill Road. The more dangerous area is north of jericho. Only caveat, they are talking about changing that whole Jericho Tpke/Route 110 interchange, which will involve major constructions if they ever do it. Just a thought.
No, the area "south of Jericho Tpk and east of 110" is not Huntington Station; it's South Huntington, Crooks.
A map of the Hamlet of South Huntington in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County:
South Huntington is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of South Huntington have a "Huntington Station, NY 11746", "Dix Hills, NY 11746" and "Melville, NY 11747" mailing address.
take a drive though that area....then take a drive through the area the previous posters are talking about (north of Jericho) and you'll notice the difference. South of Jericho is fine.

All I said was "Google it Jefe".
Sage advice methinks.
I dont earn a living in sales in Huntington Station.

I drive through there often and it seems nice, especially east of Melville Rd.
Be aware that a Lowes is going to open on site of former Huntington Town House which may impact traffic patterns and such close to that local area.
