Hi All,

My wife and I are looking in this school district and have many concerns. We do not mind the diversity issue however the schools 4 year college rates, free lunch programs as well as recent conversations with parents that have kids in the district. Are there any good school websites offering recent reviews, stats, etc. We do not have any children yet but we are worried about resale and raising a family.

Thanks

If you have many concerns, move on. Concerns don't change so fast on LI

One of my daughters owns a home in the So. Hunt. SD.
She has young children and has no issues with the elementary/middle school(s). According to her and my son-in-law, St. Anthony's might be a consideration as High School, but they'll re-evaluate in 9 years, when it's time to make that decision .

Why not visit the school(s) yourself and make a decision based on what you see? Call the principal's office and ask for a tour; chances are they'll welcome the opportunity to show you what you want to see and gladly answer your questions. You might also want to get in touch with their PTA to get "inside" information...
Everyone has their own preferences, opinions, etc. There are plenty of people who like what the SD has to offer - just as you can always find people with negative opinions in any SD.
JMHO

Thanks Elke. That is the exact problem. We are asking too many people! We are going to call/visit the school even though a lot can change in 5-6 years when we have children. no one has a crystal ball, but is there a website with accurate data regarding race, religion etc so I can as least determine if there is a trend.

Oakwood/Birchwood have a much heavier Spanish population than Countrywood/Maplewood.

You will have to click on different years to get the trends, but this site may have the data you are looking for:

I've known some fine people who have gone through the South Huntington schools over the years. With that said, it is not regarded on Long Island as a great school district. Your personal experience with the schools may turn out to be fine, but you will not sell your home in the future by promoting the fact that it is served by South Huntington schools. Good or bad, people with kids buy homes on Long Island based on the reputation of the school district. South Huntington is not typically a destination for them. Cold Spring Harbor district is.

Unless they are busing kids around the district to achieve diversity. They did it in Huntington school district 3 when I was a kid. They took kids from Huntington Bay and shipped them off to da hood and sent kids from da hood to Flower Hill school.
