The Southern Poverty Law Center came out with a report saying that Latino's on LI "Live in Fear"
Now every news station, newspaper, etc, is running a story about this report, which from what I can see gets its evidence from interviewing a few dozen Hispanics and asking them if they've ever felt threatened here, and to a few news reports with comments attributed to a couple of local politicians who basically made off the cuff remarks about violence against illegal immigrants.
However, the attacks on Levy, who simply wants to curb illegal immigration, are given no evidence, yet he gets slandered regularly by the Hispanic lobby as a racist. There is a lot of emotion in this issue, and not much truth coming from either side.
Those who hire illegals should be prosecuted, they caused this problem.
yes but at the same time...a lot of illegals do jobs we wouldn't want to do...sanitation, house cleaning, cleaning bathrooms etc. etc. I don't agree with illegals being here, but at least someone can do those kind of jobs us law-abiding citizens don't want to do.
Agreed. It really is too bad that our government continues to fail re: immigration. It really is quite simple: don't take on more than you can handle. Duh.
The problem is that all these terms get mucked up in the emotion of the subject.
Someone looking at you funny on a plane because you look middle eastern is not "profiling". Profiling has to do with the authorities pulling you out of line and searching you based only on the fact that you look middle eastern.
Similarly with the word "racism" where it often replaces the word "prejudice" or "ethnocentrism" in many cases.
This has happened to my Bengali friend in the airport...I was with him. he is 27 years old, looks young, and is the sweetest guy on the whole planet. He says he always gets profiled...he is used to it by now. NEWSFLASH: people of all races can be "bad." I'm so sick of hearing stuff like this.
Folks lets not confuse the issue. Illegal aliens are just that, Illegal and the Govt should enforce our borders and our laws. That is their job. As taxpayers we expect to be and feel secure. Pockets of illegal aliens have created lawlessness throughout the nation and Long Island. A new crop of Gangs IE: MS-13 have made the front pages of snoozday as of late. A lot of our recent homicides, gang fights, robberies, assaults, etc have been due to illegals and it shouldn't be tolerated.
That being said this has led to a lot of racist attacks and that should not be tolerated. The Govt is virtually throwing their hands up and a frustrated few are taking things into their own hands.
It doesn't help that Steve Levy is putting a message out their that is akin to throwing gasoline on the fire. It is many opinions that he is racist. Idon't know but it seems to be true.
actually, its the homeowners who want the cheapest contractor THUS the contractors must find the cheapest workers. too bad theres no union on long island.
The real cheapskates do it themselves ... especially lawn and garden care.
by all means, Im not saying hiring illegals is right BUT they have to work when here and they need the money. I would rather see them work than not work, rob, steal or possibly sell drugs. of course, they can always join gangs.

On LI it seems the predominant gangs come from Central America and Mexico and that is an offshoot of the illegal immigration from those areas to here. Out in flyover country, aka the real America, there are plenty of homegrown American gangbangers, black, white, etc.

Ah, the spoiled American who won't get his/her hands dirty myth! This is something LaRaza (actually a GANG, not a legitimate organization) would like you to believe. Americans are sometimes kept out of workplaces because they do not speak the predominant language of the majority of existing workers (I know someone who wanted to do cleaning and maintenance for a LI hospital and was told that since he didn't speak spanish they couldn't hire him). Americans also literallly cannot afford to take the wages offered because, unlike illegal aliens, we have to pay taxes, plus we do not tend to live 30 to a house for ultra-cheap rent.
Go over to the C-D Work and Employment board and see all the Americans who cannot find anything and would do these labor jobs. With this recession and the unemployment rate, the idea of the spoiled and picky American is going to fade fast.

Yeah those landscapers are casing out your house. Believe that.
They are also cruising your neighborhoods looking for crimes of opportunity such as the nice lawnmower and landscaping equipment you left inside of your open garage unattended.
No matter what I say to you it wont be good enough, I say we should make them law abiding citizens or ship them home and you compare me to Hitler, Hitler was a murderer...slightly different scenario. If I say they should put traffic cams up you would say that its an invasion of privacy even though your out driving on a public street, If I were to say that we should have government health care you would call me a socialist or a communist, meanwhile you may as well call Canada, England , Germany and Switzerland socialist or communist countries because they have government health care...and mind you...some of the best doctors in the world are in Europe. You are a person who cant just speak your mind but you live in the defiance.
