why does W. Hempstead have such a bad reputation? is it the area or because of the name "Hempstead" ?

Some parts of Hempstead have become rather crappy compared to the way they used to be.

Guess it depends on who you talk to and specifically where you're talking about.

There are areas in Long Island, and the boroughs too for that matter, that older folk remember as nicer, cleaner, less crime, etc.

Many folks here say Baldwin is horrible. I'm in Baldwin on the regular. I think it's fine, has nice homes and the schools aren't bad at all.

Folks say Freeport is terrible. I don't really know Freeport, but I've been out there a few times in the last couple of weeks, visiting a new friend who has a very nice home there. (Driving through some parts look a little country to me, and I know there is a seedy side, but the area I've been visiting seems nice enough.)

Folks say Roosevelt and Uniondale are done, marked with an "X"
(no comment on those...*s*)

I guess it depends specifically where folks are talking about and relative to what...

Probably more because of it's proximity to Hempstead, which is one of the worst areas on LI....but in reality, it's pretty well separated. Some people do erroneously believe that Hempstead and West Hempstead are one-in-the-same.

The schools have also declined, but are still OK. It's also shifted from overwhelmingly white to a more diverse population, which still makes people freak out unfortunately.

West Hempstead is a town with different aspects to its different parts. Near the Hempstead border, near old National LIquidators, its an eyesore, yet Cathedral Gardens, located just north of Liquidators is beautiful. Eagle Ave area has seen better days, but the Maple Ave area, just a few blocks away, is gorgeous. Parts of Lakeview also has a West Hempstead mailing address, further adding to the confusion .
