I spent 8 summers on LI, and just recently had my first 4th of July in North Carolina. There are far more fireworks on LI with minimal to zero police interference. It's not even close.
That being said, the right to keep and bear fireworks is not exactly on my list when looking for a home.
I suggest you find a new hobby.
My neighborhood these 2 hemorrhoids insist on calling police over anything and everything. Damn they make it fun to launch those festival balls.
Typical long Islanders, they run their mowers and blowers and weed eaters sat morning till Sunday night without a break then call police cause the neighbors kids mini bike makes noise.
That's alright, you have been warned, when you live here and experience the culture intolerance you will understand. Its not just us adults who refuse to grow up they mess with. You will see.

I DID live there. I left because of the cost of living relative to the return on that investment. Never had an issue with noise, fireworks, or my dogs barking. My theory is everyone who lives there willingly is an idiot. And then there are guys like you, who are idiots just for the sake of being one. You fit right in.
If the budget has to move upward we'll figure that part out. Last night I saw a number of listings on Zillow and some of the $3k rentals looked dreadful.
Surprisingly, I did find some interesting possibilities in the outer reaches Queens. I know I'll need to be careful there but I was really surprised with areas like Bayshore, Kew Gardens, Jamaica Estates and other places.
On LI, it looks like a lot of the more desirable areas are not taking pets. Too bad for me.
Last thought on my preliminary research: SF and townhomes seen to be potentially better deals than many of the modern apartment units. I saw studios for $2k+ on LI. Not LI City, LI. I didn't expect to see that.

Sounds like you have a pet or pets--dog or cat? Landlords can be picky. Some will take one but not the other; some will only take small dogs (often 10 lbs or less) and others restrict the breed. I run into that all the time - frustrating for everybody

Yes, Bayside is correct. Does the NYC tax apply if you live they but work on LI? If so, that is a big deal. Taxes on income are more impactful than other taxes applied to usage or property ownership because it applies to the top line, not line items.

NYC residents pay local income taxes regardless of where you work.
While large parts of Glen Oaks/Floral Park are indeed within NYC limits, residents there avoid city tax due to the 11004 zip code.
Zip code 11004 is located in Queens County.
While some zip codes share a primary and secondary county like "11040" (New Hyde Park primary is Nassau County and Queens is secondary county), 11004 does not.
