I am going to move to LI in a few weeks, and will probably end up being based around the Nassau/Suffolk border area.
I know this summer is particularly hot, but generally speaking do people on the forum feel that renting a house with air conditioning would be a good idea?
In other words, does it get very hot and humid in summer, to the extent that it makes sleeping at night difficult without aircon ?
Also, are mosquitoes a problem in LI?
Do most people put mosquito nets on the windows?
Just curious...where are you from? Very unique questions..mosquito nets?..lol. We aren't exactly in the tropics here but you will need air conditioning.
You do NOT want to live here for the summer without AC. When we have temps upwards of 90 degrees it is unbearable. The head doesn't really drop when the sun goes down either. Do yourself a favor and get AC!
I am temporarily in my parents' home without AC outside of a couple bedrooms. You don't want to be in 90+ heat without it. I sweat just sitting in the living room doing absolutely nothing. Fans are just not good enough for the large common areas. Showers are my best friend.
I grew up in Western New York (Upstate for those that aren't familiar with New York State north of Westchester) and I can tell you that Long Island summers are much hotter than I expected. In WNY we always got by without A/C with those cooling breezes off of Lake Erie, however unless you live somewhere like Montauk with a very strong marine influence you definitely need A/C on Long Island! Don't get a home without it, you will be miserable!
Without knowing where you are coming from and your economic situation - it's difficult to answer your question.
If you are coming from VT - then you'll find the summers down here brutal.
If you are coming from FL - then you'll find the summers up here very tolerable.
Also, our electric rates on LI are among the highest in the country - so having AC on all summer long costs money. If you can afford to stay cool - then do so. If not, don't worry - generations of Long Islanders grew up here without AC and all lived to tell the tale - myself being one of them.
You don't need AC all summer long here on Long Island but when it gets hot like it is now (and it WILL get this hot every summer) you'll need AC. You don't need central air. But if you are on the 2nd floor you'll be in even greater need of it.
Bugs are not as much of a problem here, unless you live immediately adjacent to a swamp or something.
