Oh I know they're a pain, I was a cashier/bagger at a grocery store for about 8 years. I guess I'm just bitter because the workers nowadays, mostly the younger ones, are more concerned with talking about their day, weekend, etc with other cashiers, than paying attention to the task at hand. I try to do the self checkout because I prefer to pack my own bag, but sometimes I have too much stuff and don't want to hold up lines there.

I mean, 1 can of veggies, and a box of cereal in one bag. 1 bag of frozen veggies, and 2 cups of yogurt in another bag. 1 bag of pasta and a can of soup in another. I live upstairs, and thank for you making the bags as light as possible, but more bags does not help the situation! lol

Davie, I used to have this one lady that absolutely loved me when I cashed. I was quick, could pack all of her stuff into 4 bags and knew the way she wanted them packed. She used to tell me all the cat food had to go in the 2 paper bags or the taxi guy would not carry them. She made me hide the cans of cat food and would only allow me to do 4 bags total. They were double paper in plastic too! lol I called her the crazy cat lady. She was quite odd but always came to my line! lol

Did they not go through training to "build a house" in the bag so to speak? I mean, seriously, it's not that difficult to get a bag to stand if you pack it the right way. Today, I bought 17 items, and guess what? I had 8 bags! No wonder someone invented canvas shopping bags!
I always bag my own. Sometimes I have to fight with the baggers to do it. I do much better than they do and no squished produce or leaky soy milk.

I see TONS of weird customers all the time. They're either weird or just plain stupid (often times a combo of both)

A lot of customers come to my line for my friendly demeanor and attentiveness to them and not the bagger or cashier. Often times I do talk to my bagger, but some of my customers often join in on the conversation and some enjoy just listening to our banter.

Other customers cant speak a lick of english (that has really been on the rise lately) while others are too busy yakking away on their cell phone

I had a customer come to my line once and I said hello to her but I didnt smile much as I was in a horse s**t mood that day. And I was just about to ask her if plastic bags were ok and she said

Quote:
Where's your smile? I come to this store almost everyday and I get a smile, but why haven't you smiled? You know I spend over $1000 a month here and now I come in and I dont get that Publix smile I have come to EXPECT when I shop here, this is why I dont shop at Albertson's. You have really put a damper on my day not giving me the Publix (my company) smile Im ENTITLED to, I have a good mind to report you to your manager. And no plastic will NOT be ok, I want double paper bags packed very light because I live on the 3rd floor, and I am not that strong, Im an old lady damnit
Words cannot describe how shocked and angry I was at her. People like her, and customers who drive $60k + cars and live on food stamps AND wic just **** ME OFF!

Six pages and no Sunflower Farmers' Market? Pecos and Trop and the other one is Jones and Sahara iirc. Fresh sausage made in house every day, best produce, tons of organics and natural products at decent prices, and great beer and wine selection. You may not be able to get everything you need there, though. I live in Ely and I come down every month or so to stock up. I dont buy produce at any other grocery store now (except in Ely when I really need something). If you buy produce at Smiths or, heaven forbid, Walmart (worst produce I have ever seen), go check out Sunflower. Wendsdays are best because you get both last weeks and the comming weeks ad prices.

Actually, that would be Rainbow/Flamingo for the second location. I sometimes forget about Sunflower market, even though I hop over that way once every other month. It's such a drive with the traffic, but the deals can't be beat.

Uli, you are right about most of Walmarts produce. Doesn't stay fresh long, plus it's higher priced than other stores. Although they will match any store's price for produce, you just have to bring in a store ad showing it's cheaper somewhere else.
