The Associate Press released a story today stating that Hawaii is considering legalizing Gambling and allowing Casinos.

While it's not a done deal... what effect do you think this would have on the already Hammered Vegas economy?

The Story suggests this would really cut into Asians coming to Las Vegas, and also suggests that the Hawaiians that come to Las Vegas would just stay home?

Every time there is a budget shortfall in State Governments ... the Brilliant Minds want to implement lottery, gambling, and cigarette taxes.

What do you think?

I was born and raised in Hawaii and we never heard the end of this "lets legalize gambling" talk ever since I was a lil' kid(I'm 23 now). This issue is nothing new, so don't be surprised if nothing comes of this; things have to get much worse for Hawaii's economy for this to really be an issue. Personally, I understand how it would help the economy in many ways, but I see so many other kinds of issues that make legalized gambling in Hawaii such a big mistake, and quite frankly, Hawaii is one of the most gorgeous and amazing places in the world and quite a draw for people;a much more diversified economy would help residents and visitors much more than legalized gaming

In direct answer to your question...NO. Living in the gambling mecca of the world, why would I need to travel anywhere to gamble? Heck, I can gamble when I go get gas and go food shopping..LOL!

We have friends that have lived on Maui for the past 20 years, they've been saying the state has wanted to implement gaming from when they first moved there.

Anyways, with so many states/countries having legalized gaming nowadays I've often asked the same question, "if you have gambling at home, why come here?"

The reply is always the same and is universal "because there's no place like Vegas!!!"

Hawaii is not going to build more than a casino or two and they likely will be evening affairs similar to what exists in the Caribbean today. Might help spur a little more traffic from Japan, but more likely just gets visitors to leave a little more money on their vacations. Could slightly cut down on the visits from Hawaiian residents, but most of those people will still come to Vegas as much as they do now because it is without question the favored vacation destination.

I go to Hawaii to lay on the beach. It doesn't interest me to gamble there since I can do that in Vegas, not sure how Hawaiians feel about it.

Yep, and that's why everyone goes. Gambling will give people one more thing to do after a day at the beach, but it won't be the main reason to vacation there.

Default gambling in hawaii?

Well, I use to live in Hawaii. Every time I want to fly home, the ticket price is what stops me. I can only go during off season. If they did legalize gambling how much do you think the ticket price will be? Off season the tickets are $400. In my opinion I don't think any place can offer deals the way Las Vegas can. I love Hawaii but lets leaving the adult Disney Land to Vegas.

People go to Hawaii to enjoy the outdoors. If they have gambling in Hawaii it will be for the locals.

Agreed - it would just be for the locals.

I don't see any tourist flying to Hawaii to sit indoors surrounded by typical casino walls - the same that can be found in nearly every other state these days.
