Ya know, I've been toying with the idea of moving to (or around) Vegas for a while. My partner and I are thinking about Henderson and are coming with a final decision shortly (our lease is up in Nov).....and Ive been reading threads off and on for the last few months here, and I've always wondered why people curse the name of Vegas. I'm aware that the city is not for everyone for many different reasons.. the adult themes and the heat I can imagine being number one..

But I've never understood when people would say about moving here and failing. I never realized what that meant---PEOPLE MOVE THERE TO GAMBLE FOR A LIVING ?!!?

If that's the case, no wonder people get so angry when they have no monies

We like to gamble, but really only a small amount.. we just do it to have something to do once in a while.. ya know, just a nice night out. I can't imagine focusing on surviving off of gambling?!

Sorry for this post. I'm really stunned and I shouldn't be.. lol

I guess we'll be fine. We are just 2 simple guys who enjoy coming in out of the heat and into the air conditioner... LOL

Take a grain of salt and sleep on it.

If you are a compulsive personality Las Vegas will kill you. It is the nature of the joint. Booze, drugs, gambling, sex, food...you name it the place will provide it in excess. I actually think we kill more with food than anything else.

It is not a nanny state place. It will let you do what you want. That is good and bad.

Compulsive personalities should live in ND or SD or at least Indianapolis. But if you are reasonably well adjusted to life it is a regular place. Just no safety lines.

I think, or at least hope, when people tell you they tried to gamble for a living they mean poker, or at least sports betting, or at least card counting - since it is common knowledge every other game is unbeatable.

And none of those things are easy :P

is it even possible to count cards anymore now that they use so many decks?

Sure, there is still alot of single and double deck games around town. A shoe game can work to your advantage once you master shuffle tracking.

I live in Henderson, My wife and I have "normal" jobs and have a 14 year old daughter. we very very rarely gamble. The only time we do go to casinos is to see a show, go to the movies or have dinner. I have lived here over 15 years and have seen it all. I have seen co-workers gamble away their house payment, car payment. If you don't have a gambling or drinking problem, this is a pretty good place to live. I like Red Rock, Lake mead and Mt Charleston.

I'd think only Poker is possible...and even that is questionable.

Even that, the house takes RAKES...then there is pressure to 'tip the dealer'...

So, even if you are slightly better than others...the house/rakes/tips can sap away those slight profits.

As an avid online poker player (almost everyday)...with a winning record way into the profits. STILL, to make a living off that, wow, can't imagine that. I mean, you must risk a lot to try to make a decent enough living to 'support yourself' playing. It just seems a million times easier to have a regular job, and just play in your free time without stress of 'making a living' off it.

Pretty much everyday, I see good online players yelling about 'donks' and everything else...how they are great players, but someone who played something worse than them beat them. That's common in poker. Even though you read everything, study everything, your AA can still get beat by A2. You can buy right back in again, get KK, and get beat the next hand by someone with AA. It's just not a pure profit win-everytime-game.

What are you referring to when you say shuffle tracking? Yes, it's possible to count when you find a hand dealt game but impossible to win because once you start wide bet variations because you know the deck is rich, the dealer calls out your bets to bring it to the pit bosses attention. Then it is not uncommon for them to ask you to leave the game. With a shoe dealt game, a large percentage of the casinos now use the continuous shuffle machine and it is impossible to ever establish a count with them.

Vegas is like most places in respect there is good and bad,I had a very wise man tell me when I first moved to Vegas that there is every kind of Vice here not only gambling but drugs, sex, over eating and more. As an adult you choose whether to seek out those things or not.

There have been people come here and get caught up in the seedy side of Vegas and it's not just gambling and it's ruined their lives. People who have have an addictive personality could be easily pulled into something that could change their lives for the worse. It's a great place to live work and play but it can also be a place that can be someone's down fall.
