I'm a single white male from the Los Angeles area who is considering moving to Vegas. I work from home so the job market isn't a concern.

I'm in my late 20s and can't really afford a decent place in the Los Angeles area.

Last week I drove to Vegas and looked at 3 apartment complexes around Sahara/Fort Appache. I really like the shopping centers and resturants on Charlston Blvd.

The one apartment complex that I like best was built in 1985. Its a well kept and clean building.

I want to stay away from drug dealers as well as gangs. Is this a safe area to live in? The zip code is 89117.

Another concern of mine would be meating other people in Sumerlin. I don't know anyone in Las Vegas. I'm not into clubs, gambling or drinking.

The reason I'm considering Vegas is because its only a 4 hour drive to visit family and friends in LA. Another reason is cheaper housing.

Currently at age 28 I'm living at home with my parents because I'm unable to afford a studio apartment in a good part of LA for $1100 a month. I don't want to pay $800 a month to rent a room in a strangers house in the LA area either. I really need to get my own apartment and in Vegas I can afford a nice apartment on my salary.

We live on Charleston and Fort Apache and for the 7 months we've been in Vegas, going to the stores at night hasn't been a safety issue. Beautiful area. A lot of people (couples, group of friends, singles/married-pretending-as-single at the bar) go for happy hour (pretty cheap around that time) at Kona Grill on Rampart/Fort apache and Charleston. can't even find a seat most of the time - out on the patio where happy hour is. village square center on fort apache and sahara also has a movie theater and close by is the library and an art museum (if you're into that).

The Lakes and Peccole Ranch are nice areas to live if you're in a house. Apartment living in a complex that's on Sahara is totally different and I couldn't tell you anything about that. I go grocery shopping at the Smith's at Hualapai and Charleston at 2AM all the time and there are never any shady characters hanging out in the parking lot. I also used to walk my dog at midnight or later in the summer (when the temps had cooled off) all over the Lakes and it was totally safe.

Very nice area IMO. I lived there for 2 years. Great dining options around there. Cheesecake Factory...PF Changs..Kona Grill...Suncoast casino...Claim jumper...just to name a few. 3 golf courses within 4 miles of there. Plenty of trails and food shopping. As long as you are not driving to the strip every day I would say it is a great choice.

If it's the apts I'm thinking it is, they were built in 1987. Spacious, but older. And depending on what part of the complex you live in, it can be hell on one end, and paradise on the other. But they are close to so much, lots of walking opportunities, on the bus line if you need it and as far as I'm concerned, it's safe enough there, especially if you live on the second floor. (no elephants above you)

I stay in the area (less than a year in Vegas) and I have to say it is a really nice place. Library, shopping (even costco), walking trail, dining options, red rock /sunset/rampart casino (even if you are not into gambling you can still try early bird and graveyard specials in these places when u don't feel like cooking) , bus service, see mountains with snow from your balcony, a lot of green around if you come to grand canyon sahara/charleston side ... :-) ....

1. what is the Kona Grill? (hawaiin?) 2. If you are going to pay a grand a month in rent, don't get an apartment, rent a house!

I live in Broadstone Talavera (Sahara / Ft Apache) and I LOVE it! It's quiet, I have access to the greenbelt of Peccole Ranch, great shopping and restaurants nearby. There are some drawbacks. Like the Summerhill Pointe apartments which attracts Metro consistently.

I drive to the Strip five days a week for work and the commute is not that bad.
