Just moved here and narrowing in on a job in the restaurant industry. Once I have something secured, I'll be looking for a house or apartment. Craigslist is hemorrhaging cheap spots, but I need to be cautious here: I've lived in seedy areas around Portland, Oregon and I'm okay with some shadiness. Mainly I want a spot that is coming up, has young people and some amenities within a mile, and isn't super far out. I don't want to move to the 'burbs.

So I think that area around the north part of the strip seems really beautiful and has a 50's feel, all sun bleached and old. And the apartment photos I've seen are often hardwood-floored. My only concern really is the petty crime I've read about (burglary and car-jacking). Freemont up until you get to El Cortez seems full of ne'er do wells. Any specific neighborhoods people know about that fit my preferences?

I'll let everyone else chime in on neighborhoods, however be VERY cautious of the listings on Craigslist. If they seem too good to be true, they are.

You won't get a 3,000sqft house with a pool for $1,100/month.

Try east of the stratosphere. Between Sahara and Freemont and Los Vegas Blvd and Eastern.

Lots of gentrification and places getting close to that.

YOu can also pick up a "relatively" cheap rental in Soho Lofts. LV just south of Charleston.

That's great advice . I'll be looking around that area over the next few weeks. Anyone else chime in on good areas for young people to live in this town?
