I have lived here in Vegas for 6 weeks now. I agree with most of what was posted. I especially like #1. I'm hoping I get to the "friendly, just cautious" opinion soon. So far I would say most people I have encountered in Vegas are indifferent = lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern for anything.

You don't do much driving around here..... People here don't know how to drive. Their concept of driving is at least 15mph over the speed limit when traffic is flowing. They have no concept of turn signals. They wait till the last minute to merge (Hence the traffic jams). Taxi cab drivers make me wonder how they get their licenses in the first place. And the Metro cops are the worst offenders to traffic laws. How do you expect the people to abide by traffic laws when the metro police can't even follow the same laws. Everything else you said is pretty much spot on. Except you didnt mention about the jobs and that in order to get a decent job you have to know someone.. Either that or get a mediocre job where nepotism is king.

That is exactly the same complaint that is made about the drivers in virtually every city in the country. LV drivers are very much the same as CA drivers or Phoenix drivers. I actually much prefer western drivers to eastern ones. I find LI scarey nowadays. However traffic in Las Vegas is vastly better than in CA or Phoenix or Dallas or Houston.

I moved here from Miami, and found people in Vegas to be far nicer than in Miami. Then I made the mistake of reading Vegas "rants & raves" on Craig's List, and then I thought people in Vegas were miserable. But when I stopped reading Craig's List, they seemed nice again. Every city has miserable people. It's all in what you make of it.

While I agree with your assessment of the drivers in town, I still don't understand where you're getting "in order to get a decent job you have to know someone.. Either that or get a mediocre job where nepotism is king".

I moved here from across the country, because I was offered a position, making pretty decent money. It's not extraordinary, but it was more than I was making back in the Midwest.
Maybe you've only tried getting a job in the hospitality industry?

I liked the post. An honest set of experiences from someone who has lived in Vegas long enough to have an informed opinion. Not the usual trashing of Las Vegas from someone who came unprepared, uninformed, and unskilled expecting a cake walk. Then ripping on the town for their own failures. Nice job.

Not all cab drivers are maniacs, but yes, there are some. I'm always extra careful when I'm on duty.

Default Great post, I agree w/you, also frm Dal/Hou Tx

You have nailed it! Excellent post, thanks. I actually had to move back to "Hellston" in '06, due to dad's illness, now I'm back to stay. The hot, humid weather, sitting in your car for 45 mins to go 4 miles on Westheimer sucks. The traffic here is great. Many people are very friendly here and my dog loves the dog parks. Great deals on food, 24/7 entertainment, great place for our friends & familes to come...hmmm, maybe that part's not sooo great

Just wanted to give some props on a great post. I'm from Dallas originally, have lived in Phoenix and Atlanta, and just arrived here on Tuesday, having visited and stayed previously with my girlfriend, a Houstonian who has been here from 2 years. The weird thing to me is random people telling me that Vegas sucks -- like the apartment maintenance man who warned me that everybody is out to screw each other, that you can't trust anyone. I've never had that in other cities.

So far the people I have met have seemed pretty cool - friends of my girlfriend, and the guys I have interviewed with at the defense contractor I will be working at. Another strange this is that I am trying to buy a short sale condo though, and the way real estate moves around here seems to be very quick, much faster than TX. Well, fast (the bidding process), and slow (the bank). Hope it all works out..

Ahhhh...don't worry about it. That translates to "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" in southern Nevadanese.
