What do you think the team name could be?
They already have an ECHL team, the Wranglers. It's not so unusual to have ice rinks in the desert anymore... I played hockey in the Persian Gulf when I was stationed there from 98-2001.

The zamboni wasn't invented up north. It was invented outside LA back in the 30's.

Actually, they held an outdoor NHL pre-season game in Vegas back in 91, LA Kings vs NY Rangers. It included bugs on the ice and the infamous Hrudey-cam (a small but heavy camera mounted on goaltender Kelley Hrudey's helmet).

Not that it's a good idea to have outdoor hockey games anywhere warm. But it has been done! (Or, consider the big outdoor ice rink they made in Mexico City one or two winters ago)

We have more than one indoor ice rink in Vegas, and have had several since the early 60's. In the 60's we had our first minor league Hockey Team. We've hosted Disney on Ice, and other ice shows for 40 or 50 years; not to mention some Las Vegas shows that are entirely or partly done on ice every night on a stage that can also be used for other things. They put temporary ice rinks in Thomas and Mack, and some of the hotel venues all the time. They'll play hockey one night and basketball the next. Also they put in seasonal outdoor rinks downtown on Fremont Street, and out at Lake Las Vegas, to name two. They also do ice skating on Teflon rinks, but I don't know if they could play hockey on them. All you need do is freeze an inch or two of ice. Not a problem in the desert at all. The technology has been there for decades. If you can do a mud bog, a motorcycle race, or a World Championship Rodeo in the Thomas and Mack Center and clean it up for Barney on Ice the next, you're in Vegas Baby!.

Las Vegas gets quite cold during the NHL hockey season. While most of the time not cold enough to freeze water, but certainly cold enough to easily maintain frozen conditions of a hockey rink with a little help.

Two years ago in January, I left Albany airport at 41 degrees, only to arrive in Las Vegas where temps were only in the high 30's during the day and below freezing at night. LV colder than Albany, NY...in the dead of winter???? Definitely not the norm...but it stayed that way the whole week I was there. People were having problems with water pipes and swimming pools freezing.

Where do people get the idea that a hockey rink will melt in a warm climate, and it has to be freezing weather to ice skate? Have they not heard of refrigeration? Hockey rinks aren't outside, at least none that I've seen around here. I'm sure they might be in Minnesota, but then don't the fans freeze their tails off? But even if they were outdoors it isn't left up to nature to freeze one unless where you come from they play on frozen ponds. Nowadays in modern times they actually use refrigeration. We have ice rinks in Las Vegas where there is skating all year round. When it's 110º outside it feels pretty good to go ice skating. And, for outdoors rinks in any weather there is always teflon.

I think the best fit would be the NBA as Vegas seems more a basketball town than anything.but we need an arena that can meet both the NBA and NHL standards. the Thomas and Mack just won't cut it.
And for that reason we probably wouldn't get a major team. The venue would have to be built with private funds and I don't really see that coming to fruition any time soon.
