I'm from the Bay Area and there are 6 major sports teams (49ers, Raider, A's, Giants, GS Warriors and Sharks). The Giants and Sharks are the only teams with a newer type of stadium. No one seems to care if the Raiders or A's or 49ers get a new stadium. Even though there is culture in this area, sports are really down on the list for the majority of people because it costs too much to do go these games. Why even show up at the game if you can watch it on tv? I guess there are other things to do in California than watch sports vs. Green Bay where the whole area is into football and that's what everyone has to look forward to. Heck no one even cares about the GS Warriors.

No one is really from Las Vegas, even kids who were born and raised in Vegas have parents from somewhere else, and they identify with that somewhere else. There is also the multitudes of service workers who cannot afford to go to a game, have time to. Most of these people are from somewhere else also. In short, I believe that a majority of working people in Las Vegas do not like living there, and are only there because their job keeps them there.

Then there is the law that one cannot bet on a Nevada team. Would this apply to a pro team? Does Vegas take bets on minor league games (minor league baseball, Arena League football etc.) in or out of the state of Nevada?

Could a sports team compete there, especially with the excess competition of the casino industry? Why haven't the big players there like Steve Wynn looked into a pro franchise?
A couple of points - you can now bet on NV games... In college UNLV and UNR are always on the board (for basketball and football). WRT the mack. I think it is plenty big for an NBA team and it seats almost 19K, not only 15K.

But that's the point, people from Detroit, Philly, NYC, Boston etc. can't touch an NHL ticket at home. And that's what scares the he** out of us. We don't want to be like anyplace else. Our uniqueness and our libertarian philosophy is what makes Las Vegas so popular. If it was like "back home" then it would no longer be Las Vegas. People come here because of what Las Vegas is now, and then they think they miss the things they came here to get away from, and start bitching, "It isn't the way we did it in Ohio."

My reply: "We'll if you did it right in Ohio you wouldn't have come here."

But even if Ohio was perfect otherwise, you'd still have bad weather.

To those who want a major league team I say, we get along very well without a pro sports team. I have the feeling having one would be more trouble than it's worth. I've heard this argument for 45 years, and it started before I came along. We've tried several different things here, and they all failed. One of the things that was popular and still couldn't succeed, was horse racing. With a buzzilion golf courses, we still don't have half the major tournaments we used to have. Although it wasn't the big leagues, we've tried football, basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball (besides the 51s), sportscar racing, you name it.

A major league stadium would have to be used for other things besides a once every other week football or basketball game don't forget; and you might say we have too many venues already in competition for the other events. Not to mention all the other entertainment distractions we have here that would take away from the games.

Cities, where major league sports is popular, don't have anything else for people to do, or they have ten times the area population we have. If you can get past the hypocrisy of the league commissioners, then put up the money for it if you think a team would be successful here. Otherwise, don't argue that "someone else" should risk theirs for your amusement.

Only time that has ever worked was for special events like the NBA All Star Game; and you see what a mess and black eye that was for the city.

Being the hub of MMA is enough for me. I'll still go to Locomotives games though.

I agree....there's way too much other entertainment in Las Vegas than to be bothered going to a boring game. When I visited one time, I went to visit my wife's relatives in Phoenix. Thank God they have The Diamondbacks...because that have no where near the entertainment that Las Vegas has.

Hockey in the desert. Now that's funny.

What do you think the team name could be?
