Can apartments in Las vegas deny rental to a person with felonies over ten years old that happened to them while a minor and were judificated? Is that even legal to deny someone applying for an apartment for felonies over ten years old in a different state?

So long as they don't discriminate against any protected classes, yes they can deny you for your stupidity. What did you do?

First of all, its not me, and second of all, thats the kind of ignorant discrimination Im referring too. "can deny you for your stupidity" Completely uncalled for. If I was a felon, id be offended. Though any criminal act is a desperate and naive act, not all criminals are stupid. I was referring to a potential roomate that got denied the lease because of a possession and assault charge he had judificated at the age of 13. Though that individual is pretty damn stupid, thats for me to decide because I know him. Not you. But yes, he is stupid. And Im paying for it.

It doesn't matter if you would be offended or he is offended, the people who own the apartment have the right to lease to whoever they want. There are a few laws that prohibit discrimination of protected classes (see them here). They are generally things that the person can't control and thus it would be unfair (in the eyes of the law) to discriminate against something you have no control over. Committing a crime and being arrested is something the individual has full control over and is definitely not a protected class.

It probably isn't the best business decision to not rent to your friend, but maybe they believe that even committing a crime while very young is a sign that he would not be a good tenant. That is their right and your friend will just have to learn to deal with it.

Getting caught committing a felony = Stupid. Felon = Stupid. Maybe he isn't stupid now, but he obviously once was. Are you even sure that the apartment denied him for the aforementioned felony?

Yeah, committing felonies is stupid, and usually quite inconsiderate as well (to say the least).

Nonetheless, we all have done and will do stupid things, some of us just a lot stupider - and more poorly timed - than others. I'd hope that we could forgive someone who has not been back in the system for 10 years. I'd rather have a good neighbor who looks bad on paper than a bad neighbor who looks good on paper, anyway. And of course, we forget that there are many felons who have yet to be caught, as well as social elites who we've trusted with exhorbitant social responsibilities despite their "indiscretions".

While responsibility to prevent recidivism falls foremost on the individual, such responsibility is shared by society once the individual has exhibited a desire to actualize his/her potential to reform. If we deny reformed felons an opportunity to reintegrate, we leave them no choice but to return to illicit means of gaining basic necessities such as shelter and livelihood.

And finally, that idealism being said, it is the landlord's right to discriminate on this basis. Best of hopes to your friend, who will have to keep a thick skin and good attitude.

Actuallly the record on crimes committed when you are 13 is generally sealed.

So a LL who got it might actually be into felony country.

If not sealing it should be looked into.

However there is no law that prevents a LL from not renting because your hair is too long or your eyes are the wrong color or you committed a felony at 13. LL are allwed to be twits.

Thanks to all that had constructive feedback. Im over it, Im just getting an apartment alone. My felon can crash on the couch like he will be doing for the rest of his life. Thanks to "straightfromatown" "stingray" "olecapt" for the unbiased advice and information. Moderator cut: Personal Attacks aren't allowed! The penal system is a flawed system as well as any others, slow down there cowboy. You'll get them outlaws yet. Soon you will have all the crimininals apprehended and you can go back to discriminating againts the usual race and creed. Thanks again guys.
