I don't know how many times ive read about someone coming to Vegas and jumping off the Stratosphere. Why can't they just stay in their own little town and pick the highest building to jump off of?

Doesn't matter if it's the people living there or the residents that committ suicide... the city is the suicide capital. I don't think it's somehow better because people on a suicide mission travel to the city, what's it saying about the city then? Both are bad, being the suicide capital is bad. Trying to justify it and make excuses for it is nonsense.

Read the link. Says Las Vegas is NOT the Suicide Capital but is in fact in the middle of the pack. Another incorrect slander on the City of Las Vegas.

Did you actually read the article I posted from CBS news? It doesn't seem like it... here it is again:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/...in599070.shtml

The article is about people committing suicide in Vegas and the title of it is "The Suicide Capital of America."

Besides, if you do a search online there are a lot of articles that come up about how high the suicide rate is in Las Vegas. There was even one from January 2007 in the Las Vegas Sun that said it's the one of the highest in the nation.

And again here is an academic study that says it is untrue...
Suicide and Gambling:
An Analysis of Suicide
Rates in U.S. Counties
and Metropolitan Areas
September 1998

To explore this possibility, our research group at the University of California – Irvine replicated and expanded on the
Phillips et al. analyses. Our findings are substantially different. We find that
• The risk of suicide for gaming area residents is no higher than the risk faced by residents of nongaming areas.
This finding is based on before/after analyses of six U.S. counties with gaming resorts (Atlantic, N.J.;
Lawrence, S.D.; Douglas and Gilpin, Colo.; Harrison, Miss.; and Will, Ill.). When gambling was legalized
in these counties, resident suicide rates did not rise by more than what would be expected of chance alone.
• The risk of suicide for visitors to gaming areas is no higher than the risk faced by visitors to nongaming
areas. When 91 U.S. metropolitan areas are ranked by visitor suicides in proportion to their visitor volume,
there is no relationship between the gambling and suicide by visitors. Controlling for visitor volume,
Las Vegas and Reno (Nevada) and Atlantic City (New Jersey) rank 26th, 37th and 87th, respectively.
In short, our analysis finds no evidence to support the proposition that residents or visitors of gaming areas — including
Atlantic City, Las Vegas and Reno — face higher-than-average risks of suicide.

************************
Note that your quote actually contained no facts pertaining to ther headline.. That is because the headline was untrue. And they would defend it by pointing out that the headline was opinion not fact. (Reminds me of some who write on this list) The fact is that Las Vegas does not have heavy suicide rate for its visitors. And the local suicide rate is low for the western US. The rural rate in Nevada is relatively high.

You are cracking me up. You want so desperately for things to be so perfect in your little neck of the desert. Get over it. The evidence is out there and you always choose to ignore it. Take the rose colored glasses off. Looks like I need to go back to ignoring you. Good riddance.

Red Wings Fan just ignoring Olecapt = Red Wings Fan not hearing what REAL CURRENT residents have to say about Las Vegas. She will also not be able to hear some facts about Las Vegas and some opinions either.
