Prostitution and Sin

The amount of prostitution in Vegas is in keeping with the number of hotel rooms and the entertainment nature of the town. I suspect that it is very similar to LA, Honolulu and other adult entertainment oriented areas. You can get a prostitute in any major metropolitan hotel in the US with roughly the same delay as in Vegas. Fact of life. I did not find one in Carlsbad..I found a few hundred.

When you claim Vegas is Sin City and then announce that you visit there often what conclusion would a reasonable person make?

Crime

The romance of Riverside or Temecula would make setting any show there difficult.

The site cited is of course nonsense. Check Paradise, NV. That is the town in which the strip is actually located. Tell us what numbers you find. For crime you use the direct DofJ numbers because the others are too smashed about to make any sense.

A lesson in geography. Vegas consists of three cities and a large unincorporated Clark County area. The strip is located in Clark County and is not in any of the cities. These are Henderson, Las Vegas and NLV. The Police depts however have different jurisdictions. Las Vegas and Clark Country are patrolled by Metro. While Henderson and North Las Vegas have their own police forces . It is important in dealing with these that you not use the crime reports of metro and the population of Las Vegas.

I kuse Henderson simply to demonstrate that a much larger city in Vegas in fact has lower crime than Temecula. We locals do not live on the strip and we often feel sorry for the Californians who have to live with high crime.

Seasons

I much prefer Vegas to the California coastal plan in the spring and early summer and early winter. The coastal plan is most unpleasant a good part of that time. Clounds, Fog, mist and gloom.

Smog

Vegas will rarely get a thin brown layer when the inversion is present. It is rare but does occur. Virtually all SW cities have it to one degree or another. Vegas is relatively minor in that set and an order of magnitude off that of Los Angeles.

Sewage
You don't know much about what So. Cal does with sewage do you? The beaches of both Santa Monica Bay and Orange County are regularly closed due to sewage flow. It is in fact automatic in Santa Monica Bay as there is no capability to separate sanitary and storm sewers under high flow condities. When it rains you guys pump sewage onto your beaches.

The sewer system of Vegas are well done and well constructed. The effluent there from is loaded into the Colorado and sent on to CA.

Water

Vegas has a sufficient water supply for current usage and the next 15 years. It is presently securing a supply for after that period. The proposed source of the water is contentious. It is however likely that Vegas will carry the day. Usage regulations are reasonable and allow for green lawns if you choose. There are many part of my yard.

Traffic

There are pinchpoints in Las Vegas where traffic can get slow. But it is generally rush hour and not very difficult. Delays seldom exceed 20 minutes on the worst of a rush hour commute. Off rush hours or against the rush you can get from anywhere to anywhere in 35 or 40 minutes.

Traffic in So Caofornia is bad...no horrendous. There simply is no place from Ventura County to the Mexican line where traffic is not terrrible. And Phoenix AZ is almost as bad and Tucson is worse than Phoenix. Vegas stands out as a traffic star in the SW.

Home Sales

The entire length of CA has to be one of the two or three worse bubbles in the US. Temecula is just an example. And if you are waiting for a bubble break don't hold your breath. Ohh there will be a period of adjustment no doubt as has happened before. But if you think you are going to buy back in after it drops substantially...you will learn.

Las Vegas Market

What you are missing is that the inventory reached these levels 6 months ago. Went down, went back up. Price remains fine and volumes are low. Basically we appear to be running at 2002 sales levels.

I am not sure we are not going to stay there. Builders are adopting. Sellers are holding price. There is no indication of anything changing any time soon. So the inventory goes to 30,000. So what. Takes a long time to sell a house. There clearly are strong price breaks in San Diego and Phoenix. The price however has not broken in Vegas and has actually appreciated in LA.

We still get the 8000 a month in with 3000 out. The pressure for a place to live will mount. Then we see.
\

Again there is not the slightest hint of a burst. The hotel/casino buildings are roaring on and really have all resources committed for the next five years at least. So another 200,000 or 300,000 people are coming to town. They gotta live somewherre.

So give it up. It is a nice place to live and make a living. A little blue collar but that goes with the nature of the economic engine.

The "Sin" in Sin city is mostly a ploy...make the tourists feel adventuresome. The real change over the last ten years is the money is made with entertainment and lodging and fine dining as well as from gambling. It is now one of the four really good places in the US to get a fine meal. Gambling remains important but is about to become a minority of the revenue.

Vegas is and will remain a fine place to live for a long time to come.

is las vegas crime really that bad?
I moved to las vegas in october this year, so i have only been here a few months, so far i do feel that there is a lot of crime here, from what i see on the news and see on the streets. i live in north east las vegas near las vegas blvd. and i am starting to think it might have been a big mistake to move here becasue from what i have heard this is one of the worst neighborhoods. i see the bums on the street and the graffiti, the ganster looking guys with tinted windows in their cars, it isnt all new to me becasue i am from san diego county, ca. but is it really dangerous to be living here? i am 7 months pregnant, my husband and i moved here thinking it would be nice for a change and to be able to get an bigger place to live for a cheaper price, but now i just dont know if this is the kind of place i even want to have an infant living in. last week my moped worth $2000 was stolen from my driveway, it was locked up to a post and they cut the lock. now this week 5 peoples cars in my trailer park have been broken into, i am getting really worried and want to know if i just moved to the middle of the worst part of vegas or something along thoes lines. please give me some feedack and advise.
Read the thread. She was told she had moved into one of the socio-economically challenged high crime areas of Las Vegas and that she should find a way to move.

There are of course areas of high crimie in Las Vegas. There are such in all ciities. Don't live in them if the crime concerns you and you have better alternatives.

Is there any chance of raising a family in the Las Vegas Area?
This is the original post, and what I am commenting on in an attempt to help this person. Others in this thread agree with me. Olecapt thinks its a great place to raise a family, I disagree. I have given links and facts to all my points. Olecapt has turned to bashing CA, which I never promoted anyways, and then bashing Temecula, my hometown, that I am going to be leaving soon. Then he says that there are doom and gloom clouds where I live, and that the Vegas climate is better. Actually, Temecula is inland, and we have many sunny days here. I feel his points are inaccurate Hopefully I have helped chitowner make his/her decision. If they move their family, good luck, but I was moving there, I would want to have heard the facts about LV.

olecapt... where are you getting all your facts about crime and such for cities like Henderson?
According to Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed, Henderson does have even higher violent crimes than Temecula, not that I care. We are talking about Vegas, not Henderson. Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed
And according to this website, Las Vegas Metro Area is the 4th worst in the country..
City Crime Rankings by Population Group

And what is this all about? ..... NOT GOOD NEWS HERE!!!!

Once again, Nevada has a ranking and reputation Metro isn't too proud of: The most dangerous state in the country. That's according to a new survey. It's the fourth year in a row we've come out on top but officers aren't willing to accept the bad rap so quickly.

That's because Olecapt DIDN'T raise his family there. It's easy to say you think it's a great place to raise kids if it's a hypothetical question. It's something totally different if kids are in tow and you are setting down your feet!

This is not difficult. The numbers are avaiable from the DofJ site. The numbers on the best city site are no notorously messed up. I told to go try Paradise, NV which is the town in which the strip is located. It is educational.

Suicide is a rural Nevada problem. Isolation does that.

The picture is interesting. Where is it? You don't really think it Vegas do you?

Not exactly so... the news says it's a Las Vegas problem. Do a google search for suicide and Las Vegas and you get stories like this from CBS, saying it's the suicide capital. People actually travel to Vegas to kill themselves:

Never met an anti- Las Vegas factoid you don't love have you? The article dealt with tourists not locals.

The number of visitor suicides is actually small though it does add suicides to the list without adding population. Probably inflates the Suicide rate in Vegas by 1 or 2.

Nevada was third behind Alaska and Montana in 2004. The driver however is rural Nevada which adds a couple of points to the suicide rate in Nevada. The Las Vegas rate is about that of the west including a couple of points for tourists who come here to end it all. Without the tourist it is likely at the low end of the western states.

If you live here it would seen the tourist suicide rate would not be an overpowering factor in your life.

Ohh here is a tidbit you will love....

Suicide and Gambling:
An Analysis of Suicide
Rates in U.S. Counties
and Metropolitan Areas
September 1998

To explore this possibility, our research group at the University of California – Irvine replicated and expanded on the
Phillips et al. analyses. Our findings are substantially different. We find that
• The risk of suicide for gaming area residents is no higher than the risk faced by residents of nongaming areas.
This finding is based on before/after analyses of six U.S. counties with gaming resorts (Atlantic, N.J.;
Lawrence, S.D.; Douglas and Gilpin, Colo.; Harrison, Miss.; and Will, Ill.). When gambling was legalized
in these counties, resident suicide rates did not rise by more than what would be expected of chance alone.
• The risk of suicide for visitors to gaming areas is no higher than the risk faced by visitors to nongaming
areas. When 91 U.S. metropolitan areas are ranked by visitor suicides in proportion to their visitor volume,
there is no relationship between the gambling and suicide by visitors. Controlling for visitor volume,
Las Vegas and Reno (Nevada) and Atlantic City (New Jersey) rank 26th, 37th and 87th, respectively.
In short, our analysis finds no evidence to support the proposition that residents or visitors of gaming areas — including
Atlantic City, Las Vegas and Reno — face higher-than-average risks of suicide.

Commissioned by the gamers...but done by a reasonable group...then again who but the gamers would care?
