At any rate, 409 scams typically target the older demographic via email with some type of bait like "I need your help to wire transfer funds to my friend in the US" which I'm surprised anyone actually falls for, but apparently they do.

In the context of the time, a couple of alligator clips, a resistor, some wire, a 1/8" headphone jack, and a microcasette tape recorder with vox function weren't exactly unobtanium and easily hidden. Anyone with a white work van can pull up next to a CenturyLink box, open the door with a pen knife, and attach the equipment inside the cabinet and retrieve it at a later date.

Nowadays you could probably automate the whole process with a Raspberry Pi and text the result straight to a phone number of your choosing in real time.

Like I said, the data isn't even encrypted so it's pretty much child's play for anyone who's taken some basic Linux coursework and who understands electronics. Anyone with a computer science degree could accomplish this it's really not too difficult an exercise.
Still will likely involve physical entry into forbidden places hence likely a felony. If you are willing to go that far just break in to the house and bug the phones and computers. For the computers you can likely do it with software given access.

One of my biggest pet peeves are GREEN LAWNS. Not other peoples green lawns but rules that force me to have a green and well kept lawn on my property in the city. I will be testing this custom soon. My corner lot has a ton of traffic passing by daily (even with everyone staying home). This Spring I am covering all of my visible grass (maybe 4,000 sq/ft) with fabric cover and I am placing about 60 straw bales on the weed preventing fabric. I am conditioning the bales right now and in slightly over two weeks I will be planting various food plants and flowers in the bales. I already sold my mower LOL so I am committed. I plan on eating well next winter and maybe having some to share with friends and neighbors.

YouTube has dozens of instructional videos on how to do this. It may become fairly common if the economy doesn't bounce back soon.

Are you worried about people stealing the fruits of you labor from the front of the property?

I've had cheap potted plants stolen from my front yard so I wouldn't be surprised....

I love to gamble, but I wouldn't set a foot inside a casino right now. Like the house, The Coronavirus always wins.

I am sure I will have enough to feed a few thieves, after all even a thief has to eat. I use a wheelchair to get around so I will have to depend on some of the neighbors to help out and share the food. Just a half a block from my house there's at least sixteen apartment units filled with able bodied folks. I have high hopes in turning this into a community project where we all benefit. I'll let everyone know how it worked out in November.

Back east we had community gardens but I've never seen one here. Sounds like a similar idea.

Is the Virus on My Clothes? My Shoes? My Hair? My Newspaper? 4-17-20 [ nytimes ]

We asked the experts to answer questions about all the places coronavirus lurks (or doesn’t). You’ll feel better after reading this.

When we asked readers to send their questions about coronavirus, a common theme emerged: Many people are fearful about tracking the virus into their homes on their clothes, their shoes, the mail and even the newspaper.

We reached out to infectious disease experts, aerosol scientists and microbiologists to answer reader questions about the risks of coming into contact with the virus during essential trips outside and from deliveries. While we still need to take precautions, their answers were reassuring.
