There is a strong possibility my husband's boss will transfer him to Vegas. We currently live in Powell, WY and love many things about where we live. We don't really love the small town atmosphere, the distance between conveniences, and other things. We are originally from Houston, so we are accustomed to traffic, crowds, heat, crime, etc.

We have 4 kids: 13, 12, 8, and 4. Schools are important, as are activities such as sports and other recreation. We like to hike, hunt, fish, and generally spend time outdoors. My oldest girls play softball, volleyball, and basketball. The schools here in Wyoming are quite good, better than what we had in Houston.

So here goes: I am looking to y'all for insight on moving here with kids...looking at the Henderson area, specifically, but open to information on other areas as well. Additionally, what is the job market REALLY like for someone that has a BS in Psychology and hopes to work in HR or in ABA Therapy.

Are people friendly? Cause they're not so much here...we're in a small town of 6000 and we will always be the outsiders.

Tell me your experiences, good, bad, ugly. This move is crucial because it could come at a time when my oldest is entering high school and that alone makes this momma a little scared.

Thank you in advance!

Stick to the Green Valley area south of the 215... or the Anthem/Seven Hills area. You'll be happy there and be able to do everything on your list of wants/needs.

Beyond the strip, traffic here is practically nothing in comparison to Houston and many of its surrounding suburbs Katy/Kingwood/ Sugar Land/The Woodlands are all FAR worse during peak travel times.

Las Vegas can be a fine place to live IF you enjoy the type of stuff the area has to offer. I
For the most part I think people here are very friendly and open to making new friends if a common interest exists... perhaps more so than anywhere else I have lived.

That analysis is worthless. It reflects a statistical anomaly. That is that NV is basically one very big and one medium sized school districts and nothing else. So basically you are comparing a single large school system to States with large and varied environments.

The right comparison is of CCSD to the other 10 large schools systems were it does OK. Better than LA and NYC for instance.

The correct way to view schools in Las Vegas is to use the School Achievement reports and the rankings from Great Schools. The top 25% of the schools are OK and the top 10% are quite good.

Yet another two rankings from organizations of which I have never heard.

Quote:
The report, released Tuesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, graded the Silver State as worst in the U.S. in the education category, despite the state making progress on indicators such as the percent of children who don't attend preschool and fourth-graders who aren't proficient in reading.

The latest Kids Count Data Book also ranked Nevada among the bottom states in the categories of family and community, economic well-being and health.
Preschool attendance is irrelevant. If PREschool were important, it would be SCHOOL.

What do 'family and community, economic well-being and health' have to do with the school system?.

GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out.

That's CCSDs unsolvable problem. All the money in the world won't help people who don't want to learn. And those who DO want to learn will find a way to do so, with or without school.

The only yardstick that matters is impossible to use -- comparing the same child simultaneously attending two different schools in parallel universes.

But let's face facts -- nobody relocates to Las Vegas for our great schools.
