I was in LV on wednesday, visiting for the day on a drive up from the tri-state area (about 90 miles away). I just turned 21 late last year, and prior to a couple of days ago, I had never been to LV. My initial thoughts on vegas were postitive. I toured the strip by foot and car, got some pictures, and was very impressed with the sights. We stopped and ate at a great restaurant where the food and service was excellent. So far everything was going great.

It's about 8:30 at night, and the guy I'm with has this brilliant idea to see the Fremont St. experience in DTLV. The minute we got there, I knew something was wrong. This place wasn't like the strip at all. No cops, lots of seedy looking people loitering around, etc. We parked about a block away walking to the FSE, and on our way, we were solicited to buy drugs. That should have been a sign. Once inside, though, everything seemed okay, for a while anyway.

At about 9:15, we decide to split up and take in the sights on our own. I left FSE (not thinking) and walked across the street. A man (I won't say his race for fear of being called a racist) called me over towards him. He said: "Hey, can I talk to you for a second". Me, being stupid, actually walked over towards him. He pulled out a gun, to show me, and asked me how much money I had. I told him 60 dollars (even though I had much more), and he told me to give it to him. Placing my hand over the rest of the money in my wallet, I quickly grabbed three 20's and handed it over. Once he took it, he told me he was affiliated with some "bloods" gang in LA and that I shouldn't say anything to the cops. I told him I wouldn't.

I called the cops about 30 minutes later, once I was sure I was far away from the FSE. They were not helpful at all. They told me that too much time had gone by, that DTLV was "a bad area", and that if I wanted to, I could file a report, but that was it. Understand that there were NO COPS on or near the FSE at all. NOT ONE. I couldn't have flagged one down in under 30 minutes even if I wanted to.

The next day, back in the tri-state area, we decided to cross the river into laughlin and talk to an LV metro officer. This officer was more helpful, taking a description of the man and offering to pass it along, but like the officer in LV, he did mention that DTLV was the worst area in LV and that it wasn't surprising.

I'm just curious to see how many people have been in or heard of a similar situation. I know I was in a really bad area, and that I shouldn't have gone walking around outside of FSE, but man, come on! I'm there for one night, and I get robbed at gun point!?!? What a trip.
Would you say that a place like LV would want people to stay away because of crime like this? I don't think so. With casinos popping up everywhere in other cities it would be wise for Vegas to look into the crime problem in DTLV.
Where else do tourists want to go. I've already heard to stay away from FSE.
NY had to learn this lesson when the tourists started hitting their economy by not going there. LV needs to get their police on task. The word is out.

Are you willing to help us pay for this??? We are on task. I spend the whole night going from call to call, never have a chance to actively patrol. Our fine city has half as many police officers as cities with comparable sized populations. We just do not have the manpower to be everywhere for everyone. I have spent 6 hours just clearing calls from the day shift on many occasions.

C'mon psi, give us a break!

Considering we don't pay State tax at all, and we really don't have high property taxes (to pay for the police dept and everything else) and we DO get about 38 million visitors a year to our city......

I think our police force does a pretty good job with the stretched resources they have.....

Exactly. Not to mention the rate of new resident growth no where matches the rate of new officers needed.
